Monday Blotter: 'Fix' Computer Fee Proves to be Scam

Stolen auto

Police responded to a vehicle theft at Budget Car Rental, 5151 Dempster St., on Aug. 31. According to the report, a man rented a 2011 Hyundai Elentra but never returned the vehicle. The credit card account provided the rental car agency was later found invalid. Police are investigating.

Deceptive practice

A woman came to the Skokie police station to file a deceptive practice report on Aug. 31. She told police of receiving a call from Citibank that someone had requested two additional credit cards under her name. The woman told police she never authorized anyone to open a credit card under her name. Police are investigating.

Theft from motor vehicle

A woman came to the Skokie police station and reported a theft from her vehicle on Sept. 6. She told police that Bose headphones, valued at $130, were missing from her vehicle's center console. According to the report, the discovery was made soon after she had left the Skokie Hand Car Wash, where the manager told the woman that the headphones might have been sucked into the vacuum.

Computer scam

A woman visited the Skokie Police Department to report a deceptive practice on Sept. 6. She told police that her computer was not working properly as it was requiring her to call a number that had shown up on her screen. When she called, she was informed that the computer was infected and could be fix for a fee.

The woman was charged $365 to “fix” her computer. She soon realized that she had been scammed and called her bank to stop the payment, according to the report.
