No Injuries Reported in Senior Center Fire

More than 50 senior citizens were transported to the Weber Center, 9300 Weber Park Place, after a fire broke out at the Armond King Senior Building, 9238 Gross Point Road, on Monday afternoon.

"There was a fire on the sixth floor unit and the occupant was home," said Skokie Fire Chief Ralph Czerwinski . "The woman in inhaled some smoke and was transported to St. Francis Hospital per her request for treatment. Excluding her, there were no other injuries."

The fire chief went on to say that the woman was taken to the hospital as a precaution and is not in serious condition. While officials are investigating the cause of the fire, Czerwinski said "we believe it might have been accidental at this time."

A joint effort - 

As firefighters put out the fire, more than 50 seniors were standing outside in the cold. However, thanks in part to the Skokie Park District and the fire department's efforts, the residents weren't outside for too long as they were transported to the Weber Center's gymnasium until the fire was under control, Czerwinski said.

"We didn't want people out in the cold," Czerwinski said. "The Skokie Park District and their Human Services Department did a fantastic job."
