Girlfriend: Skokie Shooter Was 'In Fear Of His Life'

About a month prior to allegedly firing eight shots at a vehicle in downtown Skokie, Alex Soballe was shot at five times outside his apartment in the 4900 block of Louise Avenue in Skokie, according to his girlfriend and police.

The girlfriend of alleged Skokie shooter Alex Soballe said her boyfriend was in "fear of his life" before he fired eight shots at a vehicle in downtown Skokie on June 14.

Nathalie Bafia, Soballe's girlfriend of two years, said Soballe was the victim of a shooting May 23 in the 4900 block of Louise Avenue. She said the shooting occurred after Soballe had a run-in with an ex-boyfriend of hers at a Walgreens in downtown Skokie.

"They didn't like each other because of prior history," Bafia said. "He was scared - they shot right next to Alex. They shot at him a couple of times.

"He was scared for his life and he went out and got a gun," she added.

Bafia lives with her mother and Soballe. She said she was terrified after she heard gunshots outside her apartment May 23. One of the bullets struck a window about six-feet above where Soballe was standing, she said (see picture). Fortunately, the apartment the bullet went through was unoccupied at the time, Bafia said.

According to Bafia, Soballe did not report who he thought was his shooter due to fear of retaliation.

Commander Brian Baker with the Skokie Police Department confirmed there was a shooting at the location May 23.

"Soballe was in the alley with one other individual," Baker said. "A car drove by and there were a reported five shots and the car then disappeared. According to Soballe and the other person, they had no idea who [fired the shots at them]."

Baker added that there wasn't too much he could say about the May shooting as it is still under investigation.

On July 2, from four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm to four counts of attempted murder, according to police. Soballe is alleged to have that were "known" to him in the 4800 block of Oakton Street on June 14 around 5 p.m.

"After the shooting Alex became worried," Bafia said of the May 23 incident. "He didn't even like walking the dog. At anytime [he feared the person] could come back and just kill him."

Soballe is due in court Monday at the Skokie Courthouse. Check Skokie Patch soon for that story.

Let's be clear. You don't just "go out and get a gun". If done legally, you need to apply for a FOID card (Firearms owners identification card). This takes 1 month to 6 weeks and requires a background check. Then you purchase the gun and wait three days to receive delivery. Then you purchase ammunition, load the gun and decide to carry it on your person. In Illinois it is illegal for anyone not in law enforcement to carry a gun in this manner. There is no conceal carry law in Illinois. What I'm getting at is that this is a pre-motivated offense. We already know from past Patch articles that he was proficient enough at guns to attend other shooting events. This is not a victim, this is a thug. If he thought he knew who shot at him he should have told the authorities instead of bringing his war to our streets. I'm personally outraged as my wife was in the parking lot of Market Place and saw him fire the shots, in her words "he than fled across the parking lot while everyone looked on terrified and stunned". This community is incredibly lucky that no one was killed or injured in the event. I just hope for our sakes that the Skokie Police can do a better job at reaching out to the youth in our community and earning their trust. This is clearly not their fault and they did an excellent job at rounding him up. However I do think that with a better level of trust young people will be more willing to cooperate to head of these tragic events in the future.

Or --- Or you could just go get a gun illegally and skip all that stuff.

So true. But I imagine that's easier said than done. Waving bats and shooting guns is not the sign of a balanced person. I'm glad he's off the streets. On to the next crime about to be perpetrated in Skokie. Ugh.
Concerned in Skokie July 16, 2012 at 04:08 PM
I'm concerned that this is the first time the community is hearing about another shooting that took place on May 23 involving the same person who was involved in June 14 shooting incident. While I understand that the May 23 incident has been under investigation, I'm wondering why this is the first we are hearing about it. I'd like to be informed when criminal acts like shootings occur in Skokie. It makes it hard to believe that crime is down when we find out that some incidents are not being disclosed to the community even though the SPD has confirmed that they have taken place and are under investigation.

This is why it's so important to SIGN COMPLAINTS, name your alleged attackers. Let the police do their job when you're a victim.

If the proposed Landlord law was passed this shooting may have never happened. I encouraging everyone to attend the village board meeting tonight on this issue. The meeting will be at Village Hall http://skokie.org/MulitFamilyLicensing.cfm

There was a police investigation, which resulted in charges, of allegations of sexual assault or harassment at McCracken Middle School in December. All incidents were said to have taken place in the school building, during school hours, when staff was present. This was also not made public even though it raises major safety concerns for Skokie children (or at least for the subset in D 73.5). Incidentally, the administrators and staff who were there, only feet away, are still at McCracken, and will be in charge of children and their safety again in the fall. Parents, please beware!

Hoping the Skokie Police Department finds out exactly where this thug bought his semi-automatic gun, who sold it to him, and how much he paid for it. Maybe SPD can set up a sting operation to take the gun dealer down. It also would be nice if this thug and thugs like him were given the option to serve time at Cook County Jail or join the U.S. military for a minimum of ten years. The drill sergeants would straighten them out in no time! However, I think most of the thugs would opt for jail because they're too cowardly to fight in a real war with real rules.

Why would Soballe tell Spd who the guy was who shot at him? By the time SPD would find the guy, the gun would be hidden already, and he would just deny everything. And then he would just go back and kill Soballe, or tell someone else to do it. This is how society is now, as bad as it is its true. Theres only so much SPD could do and before you know it, theres another murder.

Agreed.

Soballe would have told the SPD about the alleged shooters had he respected the "rule of law". He should not have remained a victim and should have immediately armed himself, I'm a firm believer in the 1st amendment. The difference is that SPD would have immediately begun an investigation with the "proper" knowledge and possibly could have brought them to justice. Had their intention been to kill Soballe they would have done so. It's very hard to miss a target from 20' away with a pistol. I'm still not sure how Soballe missed his targets? Let's remember these are adults with kid brains. Instead Soballe's life is ruined because he thought he'd take the law into his own hand and hunt these guys down. Life is not a Charles Bronson movie. Had he killed those boys on Oakton St, it would have been murder, not self defense. It boggles the mind how he thought he would get away with his actions. TTFN Soballe.
