Skokie Woman Charged in Fatal Crash that Killed Boy

Hanin Goma has been charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death for the accident that killed an 8-year-old boy.

A 23-year-old Skokie woman has been charged in the crash that killed an 8-year-old boy, according to a police statement released Wednesday.

Hanin Goma, of Skokie, has been charged with one count felony aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death, and one count misdemeanor driving under the influence. Goma was also cited for failing to yield at a stop sign and failing to provide proof of insurance.

Earlier, the Village of Skokie issued a press release Tuesday that the accident was caused by human error and that, "Village engineers will evaluate the intersection for any safety deficiencies that might have contributed to the crash."

According to Skokie Police Officer Joe Marzigliano, the charges against Goma do not contradict the Village's statement.

"The State's Attorney approves certain charges, and that will all come out in court," Marzigliano said. "Since we weren't at the scene it will depend on witnesses and evidence to determine what happened."

Meanwhile the victim, who was identified as Carter Vo, was out with his bicycle before being hit and killed as a result of the three car crash. He was pronounced dead at 8:18 p.m . Vo was a student at Madison School.

Goma faces a bond hearing Wednesday Morning.

Stay tuned to Skokie Patch for more on the story.

So......so sad.

She was on drugs and couldn't handle her car; you could have stop lights and a 10 mph speed limit and she'd still be a problem. If she doesn't go to jail she should pay for the boys' funeral and then be forced to work with accident victims - for free.

Under the influence between 4 & 4:30, Wow!
JustCami May 23, 2012 at 09:45 PM
This is just so heart wrenching. I can't even imagine what Carter's parents and family members are going through. She should be held accounted especially since she was under the influence and in a school zone. That's just so sad.
JustCami May 23, 2012 at 09:47 PM
Correction:- *She should be held accountable

This is beyond despicable and this is where I am an advocate of much harsher punishment. I'd like to know where her family was to step in with a clear problem.

Its so sad that someone knew this girl who is taking drugs and driving. Why didn't anyone stop her or get her help for her addiction. I hope she goes to jail for a long time and then she will get the help she needs. My heart goes out to Carter may he rest in peace and his family to help them cope with his loss.

it is very sad to die at such a young age, she should be punished by working in a morgue. She needs to go to jail. I fell for Carters family, may he rest in peace.
gg May 24, 2012 at 12:37 AM
She deserves life in prison. But the crooked judges/lawyers will get her off.
LK May 24, 2012 at 11:35 AM
If you are looking for a way to support the family directly, the District 69 PTO has set up an account for donations to the Vo family at First Bank & Trust (8047 Skokie Blvd, Skokie, IL 60077). Checks should be made to the Carter Vo Memorial Fund and can be delivered directly to the bank or delivered to any one of the schools or district office for delivery to the bank.

Given the fact this is western civilization where a crime was committed by an attractive woman, I would not be surpirsed if she serverd no more than a year in prison. Remember that woman who was an aspiring model who killed three people in Morton Grove a while back, she got off with a slap on the wrist. Western culture refuses to accept the fact that men and women are equal and therfore be treated equally. In Eastern culture such as India, China and the middle east she would have been executed. But do cultures who have been around for thousands or years longer than ours mean to us? That we are right? If she served more than 20 years, ti would only mean that the judge was a woman.

As I said before, I fell sorry for the family. With that said, I am going to be leaving a comment that many of you will not like. I am the parent of a now 20+ year old. I know that when they were 8 years old, I did not let them ride there bike a mile and a half from home without adult supervision. When this tragic event happened, where were the parents/guardian of this child? I am not trying to remove the presumed guilt of the driver but the parents need to take responsibility for there children.

It is extremely heart wrenching that this little boy, who had such a bright future, die because of the someone's ignorance! I could only hope that she is punished and at the very least be made to serve some jail time, but realistically she will only get probabtion and community service. It seems so unfair and I pray that Carter rest in peace and his strength for his parents to move forward after this tragedy!
LY May 24, 2012 at 06:12 PM
From what I have gathered from the different news stories, the parents were at work, it was the grandfather caring for Carter. In my opinion it is irrelevant as to why Carter was there, if it would not have been him it would have been someone else, today or another day, this woman was just plain reckless!
Lizzie May 25, 2012 at 02:30 AM
They will get her a much shorter sentence then she desevesfor sure! Having to live with that guilt though is somwhat of a "Life sentence", I suppose Of course I feel much worse for the little boy and his family, a part of me feels for the girl because she made a mistatke and now her whiole life is ruined. It is a shame that such a young boy had to die before this girl could get her life straighned up
Lynn May 25, 2012 at 01:43 PM
Although I do agree that even a stoplight couldn't prevent her from driving safely, this particular road is a mess. Too many cars drive too fast. Cars parked on Main Street make it hard to pull out and have proper visisblity. This happened right across the street from the elementary school and park. Too many kids crossing with drivers not paying attention. Please support the cause to honor Carter by going to the next Village meeting and ask them to help keep the street safer. We need to have clear alerts, lower speed limits, and 4 way stops at a couple of these intersections.

Wow, tragic. Two very young people, one dead and the other's life ruined. What were you thinking Hanin? I feel bad for you. You just messed up your life, BIG TIME. And for what? For an hour or two of having that high, intoxicated feeling. Poor girl, in that case, you have no idea what life is about. And for the little boy: may god rest your soul, I am a true believer that your day to die is written the day you are born, but I just dont know about instances such as these. Was it really your time? Or were you in the wrong place at the wrong time? Only god knows. God rest your soul, my hearts breaks everytime I think of this.

@ h m, Are you kidding me? I know this girl. If u don't let your kids drive more than a mile and a half you think this wouldn't of happend to your kids if this crazy woman wasn't in your neighborhood. That's in irresponsible comment just like this irresponsible careless selfish killer! I've heard about this girl and I've read her record, she's been trouble for a loooooooooooong time!!! It was bound to happen. She's been wild for a long time. It could of been anyone's kid, a mile a way or down the street from your house as long as she's on the street driving the way she does and doing drugs. Sorry but your not in touch with the reality of people like her!! R.L.
Rena June 06, 2012 at 07:26 PM
@ SAN Really? Then you're out of touch!!! Kids ride their bike everyday. It wasn't late at night it wasn't to early in the morning. Parents can only control their kids so much...he obviously was enjoying his afternoon ride and she was enjoying her afternoon HIGH!!! I know her and she's as wild as you can get. Go read her record of all the things she's done then make your comment. Absolutely no BLAME on parents here. It was a beautiful day they just didn't realize there was an ignorant self centered selfish disobedient witch like her!!! I hope she does life in prison for the life she took!!! For those so quick to judge the parents, GIVE ME A BREAK!! Look inside yourself and count how many times you've been way more wreckless of your decisions and by far wreckless then the blame you have of the parents! PLEASE!!! R.L.

Most of you are idiots. Did you bother to read the words written in all the news stories??? The 1st major fact in this case is that the crash was not her fault. It was the other driver. He hit her and she hit the boy. And I am guessing all you people talking trash have never smoked pot or have had any traffic tickets. Please. She said she smoked at 10am. and the crash was after 4pm when she was on her way home from work. SHE WAS NOT HIGH AT THE TIME. This was a terrible accident but she is not to blame. If she never smoked pot in her entire life this would have happened the same. Bad case of wrong time and wrong place. And you bet I dont let me kids ride his bike on a main street unsupervised . And my kid always wears his helmet. The parents or grandparent should have made sure he was wearing a helmet. Maybe he would have survived.
Annnie June 22, 2012 at 02:16 AM
The bottom line here is that Main street is a speedway .I live on main near keeler and my holuse has been hit twice .My tree has also been hit twice that I know of.I also saw a liitle girl get hit on her bike because a car rolled through a stop sign .If I had a dime for every car that runs the stop sign I would be rich!I work full time but its almost guaranteed that when I take a week off and don't leave town there is at least one accident for the week so just imagine how many occur when I'm not home!Iknow that when you cross over to Morton Grove everyone slows down for fear of receiving a ticket .Maybe some consistancy in ticket writing for speeding and failure to stop will make Main street in Skokie safer
