Tues.-Wed. Blotter: 17 Car Burglaries in October, Toilet Explosion

Toilet explosion

Officers responded to an arson call in the 5200 block of Carol Avenue on Oct. 10. According to the report, a portable toilet near the baseball diamond was "blown out in what appeared to be an explosive device." The fire department was contacted and advised the incident be documented.

On Oct. 10 at 4:41 a.m., officers responded to a disorderly conduct call in the 8000 block of Kedvale Avenue. According to the report, a home was covered in toilet paper, mustard and broken eggs. The homeowners said they have a teenage son and daughter, but did not know who vandalized their property.

Police responded to a disorderly conduct call near the Village Inn Pizzeria, 8050 Lincoln Ave., on Oct. 9 around 12 a.m. According to the report, Nathan Hart, 57, of the 6800 block of Wayne Street in Chicago, was urinating on the sidewalk in front of the pizzeria. The owner told police he called because the Hart urinated  in the presence of children.

"Tween" shoplifting

On Oct. 9 around 4:30 p.m., officers responded to a retail theft at Swatch in Old Orchard Mall. According to the report, a suspect age 9-11 stole a $125 watch from the store. The boy was described as Hispanic, about 4 feet 9 and 65-80 pounds.

Drive-thru drive-by

Police responded to a theft at the McDonald's in the 5300 block of Touhy Avenue about 3 a.m. Oct. 9. According to the report, the suspect grabbed food from the drive-up window and left without paying. The manager said the motorist pulled in front of another vehicle and took an order belonging to the car behind him before speeding off.

 

Vandalism

On Oct. 9 around 12 a.m., officers responded to the 4300 block of Mulford Avenue. According to the report, a 2001 Chrysler Concorde had its windows smashed. Nothing of value was taken.

On Oct. 8 around 11:30 p.m., officers responded to the 7900 block of East Prairie Road for a criminal damage incident. According to the report, a 2000 Grand Prix had its windows shattered but nothing of value was taken.

On Oct. 8 around 2:40 p.m., officers responded to a criminal damage call in the 8900 block of LaCrosse Avenue. According to the report, a 2006 Mercedes Benz had its windows smashed out but no items were taken.

Decked out ride jacked

Police responded to a garage burglary in the 8200 block of Knox Avenue on Oct. 8 around 10 a.m. According to the report, a 15-inch television monitor, two 7-inch strap on head restraint TV monitors, an Alpine DVD stereo and four chrome rims were stolen from a vehicle parked in the garage. The value of the items was put at more than $2,800.

DUI charge

Robert L. Morgan, 24, of the 1300 block of Estes Avenue in Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence on Oct. 9 at 4:20 a.m. According to the report, Morgan was pulled over for a traffic violation near the 8800 block of McCormick Boulevard. He had a blood alcohol content level of .133.

Oliverio Nava-Avanda, 25, of the 2700 block of Mulligan Avenue in Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on Oct. 10 around 12:30 a.m. According to the report, Nava-Avanda was involved in a two-car crash near Skokie Boulevard and Howard Street. He had a blood alcohol content level of .222.

17 burglarized vehicles in October

On Oct. 9 around 7 p.m., officers responded to a theft from motor vehicle in the 3700 block of Enfield Street. According to the report, a Pioneer stereo system was stolen from a 2002 Ford Focus. It marked the 17th car burglarized in Skokie in the month of October.

Police responded to a theft from a motor vehicle on Oct. 9 about 2 a.m. According to the report, a GPS navigation and radar detection devices were stolen after the car's windows were smashed.

On Oct. 8 at 11:25 p.m., officers responded to the 8900 block of Bennett Avenue regarding a theft from a motor vehicle. The owner told police that her vehicle's windows were smashed and her car radio was stolen.

Officers responded to a theft from a motor vehicle on Oct. 8 around 2 p.m. near the 9200 block of Kilpatrick Avenue. According to the report, a Pioneer stereo system and pair of Ray Ban Sunglasses were stolen after a window was shattered.

On Oct. 9 around 1:40 a.m., officers responded to the 8500 block of Drake Avenue for a motor vehicle burglary. According to the report, the car's windows were smashed and pry marks were found near the stereo. No items were taken. The owner said she observed three Hispanic men get into a dark blue SUV minutes before she reported the incident.

A JVC stereo, GPS navigation device and iPod charger were stolen from a 1997 Honda Civic on Oct. 7 after entry was made through unknown means.

A handicap permit and two bottles of Old Spice after-shave were stolen from a vehicle on Oct. 7 around 8 p.m. According to the report, pry marks were found on top of the door handle.

On Oct. 7 around 9 a.m., police responded to a theft from motor vehicle in the 8600 block of Trumbull Avenue. According to the report, the vehicle was ransacked but nothing of value was missing.

A JVC stereo, valued at $100, was stolen form a Dodge Durango in the 7700 block of Kostner Avenue on Oct. 2 about 5 p.m. Extensive damage was done to the dashboard in removing the stereo, police reported.

A North Face backpack containing college textbooks was stolen Oct. 9 from a vehicle parked on the Grove Avenue, just east of Lavergne. According to the report, the theft occurred after the passenger side window was smashed.

A radio was stolen from a parked vehicle in the 7600 block of Karlov Avenue on Oct. 8 around 10 p.m. According to the report, the driver's side window and rear glass were shattered to gain entry.

Police responded to a motor vehicle burglary in the 4100 block of Church Street on Oct. 10. According to the report, a GPS navigation device and cell phone were stolen.

A Sony car radio, two Bluetooth headsets, four quarts of oil, candy and a gym bag were stolen from a vehicle parked in the 9200 block of Kenneth Avenue on Oct. 8. The owner told police that he might have left his car unlocked.
