Tuesday Blotter: Employee Lifts $25K in Goods

TJ Maxx busts employee for internal theft

Zina Abdulahad, 29, of the 4200 block of Devon Avenue in Chicago, was charged with retail theft after an internal investigation revealed that she had allegedly stolen about $25,000 of merchandise from her employer, TJ Maxx, 3337 Golf Road.

According to the report, Abdulahad admitted to police that she took the merchandise and said she would return all of it back to her employer. Some of the items the suspect returned included sunglasses, six watches, five bracelets, seven rings, six pair of earning, one necklace and a heart shaped pendant, the report said. Many of the watches returned were valued at around $600, the report said.

After making several phone calls, Abdulahad's cousin came to the store and returned a variety of merchandise, according to the report.

Theft at Macy’s

Demitris Devon Howell, 23, of the 8100 Kostner Avenue, was charged with retail theft on Jan. 18. According to the report, Howell allegedly selected about $100 worth of clothing from Macy’s in Old Orchard Mall and attempted to leave the store without paying. His court date is Feb. 12.

Illegal withdrawal

A man attempted to fraudulently withdraw $2,000 from Bank of America, 4747 Dempster St., on Jan. 18. According to the report, the man presented a fake debit card and fake driver’s license to the teller. When the teller denied his request, the suspect left the store without his debit card or license.  

Theft from motor vehicle

A car parked in the 4600 block of Main Street was reported burglarized on Jan. 18. According to the report, a Coach brand purse valued at $230 was removed from the vehicle. The suspect gained entry by breaking the driver’s side window, the report said.

Business vandalized

Police responded to a criminal damage complaint in the 7300 block of Monticello Avenue on Jan. 17. According to the report, several pipes and telephone wires that led to a business were cut. The business owner estimates the damage to be around $1,000. The owner suspects an employee he had recently fired for stealing as a possible suspect, the report said.
