Tuesday Blotter: Laptop Ripe for the Taking; Driver Hit With Multiple Charges

Apple ripe for the taking

An Apple MacBook was stolen from a vehicle parked near the Best Buy store at Old Orchard Mall on Jan. 30. According to the report, the victim had just purchased the laptop from the Apple Store across the street and went to Best Buy to get some accessories. He also added that the computer was tucked under the passenger seat of his car. All in all, the victim spent a total of eight minutes inside Best Buy.

According to the report, the vehicle's window was smashed to gain entry. A witness gave police the description of a suspicious person who was near the vehicle. The suspect was described as a black male, 25-30 years old and about 5-foot-9.

$350 mirror removed

Police responded to a vehicular burglary at 8800 Gross Point Rd. on Feb. 10. A man reported that his driver’s side mirror was missing. The estimated value of the mirror was $350, according to the report.

Multiple charges after stop

Michael Sperling, 20, of the 7800 block of Kedvale Avenue in Skokie, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on Feb. 15 around midnight. According to the report, Sperling had a restricted driving permit that only allowed him to drive to and from work. Besides that violation, Sperling crashed his Acura sedan into the median and was in possession of marijuana. His blood alcohol content level was recorded at .120. His court date is March 30.

Old Navy shoplifting

Police charged Kevin J. O’Malley, 30, of the 8800 block of Ewing Street, with misdemeanor retail theft after Old Navy security saw him take five hats and five shirts from the store on Feb. 14.

While store security was unable to apprehend O’Malley, his vehicle’s plate number was recorded. Police would later track him down and find the merchandise in his possession at the time of O'Malley's arrest. 

Car grill theft

On Feb. 17 around 8 p.m., police responded to a theft from a motor vehicle in the 8100 block of Kenton Street. The victim reported that the grill of his 1999 Toyota Avalon was stolen while it was parked in the 8100 block of Kilbourn Street. This marks the second vehicle grill stolen in less than two weeks.
