Tuesday Blotter: Residential Burglaries, Graffiti

Residential burglaries

Police responded to a residential burglary in the 4700 block of Dempster Street on April 2 around 4:30 a.m. According to the report, the family was on vacation but had their security system provider notify police about a possible break-in. Upon inspection of the premises, police discovered a basement window had been broken out, but no items were apparently taken.

Police responded to a burglary in progress in the 6800 block of Laramie Avenue on April 1 around 9 p.m. According to the report, a resident called police when someone tried to break into his house.

The man added that the suspect rang his doorbell at least five times beforehand. When police arrived, they noticed several wires in the back that were deliberately cut to prevent the resident from making or receiving calls, according to the report.

The offender was described as a white male, about 50 years of age, 5-foot-10 and heavy set.

Police responded to the 5200 block of Mulford Street regarding a burglary reported on April 1 around 2 p.m. According to the report, a high- end men’s mountain bike was stolen from a garage. The estimated value of the bike was $600.

DUI

Artur Freitas, 18, of the 8400 block of Shermer Avenue in Niles, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol March 26. Freitas was stopped near Crawford and Mulford avenues for blowing through a stop sign. Police said he had a blood alcohol content level of .145. Freitas' court date is April 11.

Police stopped a black Porsche SUV for driving without its headlights near Dempster Street and Bronx Avenue on March 27 around 12 a.m. According to the report, police charged Alan Andrada Maldonado, 33, of Chicago, with driving with a suspended license, no proof of insurance and possession of drug paraphernalia. His court date is April 25.

Miguel Salina, 30, of the 4600 block of Monticello Avenue in Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on April 3 around 3 a.m. According to the report, Salina was stopped for a traffic violation near Dempster Street and Crawford Avenue. Police said he had a blood alcohol content level of .136. His court date is April 14.

Graffiti spotted

Police observed new graffiti near the 9300 block of Tripp Avenue while on patrol March 31 around 8:20 a.m. According to the report, “Hammer Time” was written on a stop sign using a marker.

Police also observed more graffiti on a yield sign in the 4100 block of Emerson Street on April 1 around 2 p.m. According to the report, the number “187” was written on the sign.

Theft from motor vehicle

A wallet was stolen from a vehicle parked in the 10000 block of Peach Parkway on April 2. According to the report, the vehicle’s passenger side door was left unlocked.

A GPS device, valued at $300, was stolen from a parked sedan in the 4800 block of Carol Street on April 3. According to the report, the driver’s side window was smashed to gain entry.

Fuel pump stolen

A fuel pump was stolen from the Pep Boys auto parts store in the 5200 block of Touhy Avenue on April 3 around 3 p.m. According to the report, a female went up to the parts department and requested a fuel pump. She then walked down another aisle and set the pump down, at which point a male picked it up and walked out of the store with it. Police are reviewing security camera footage.
