Wed. Blotter: Debt Collectors Strike Fear; Facebook Spurs Fight

Cell phone theft at Niles West

A Niles West High School student reported his smart phone stolen on March 21 around 9 a.m. The student said he left his phone unattended at his desk for a short period of time and when he returned, the device was missing.

Residential burglary

A home in the 5000 block of Crain Street was burglarized on March 27 around 9 p.m. According to the report, the back door was pried open and $150 was looted from a bedroom dresser. Police are investigating the matter.

Mailbox vandalism

A mailbox was spray painted black near Greenwood and Laramie avenues on April 3. Police said an illegible word was written on the mailbox.

Intimidating debt collectors 

A woman reported April 3 around 8 p.m. that two large Russian men came to her husband’s business in Skokie asking for money owed. The men gave the woman a phone that had their boss on the other end. She was told if her husband didn’t pay, “he will be in trouble and his family,” according to the report.

The men claimed the husband had truck repairs done at their shop and they were trying to collect what was due them.

Fight over Facebook postings

Two Niles North High School students got into an altercation on April 4 around 8 a.m. According to the report, one girl grabbed the other, threw her down and began kicking her. Teachers ultimately intervened and both teenagers, who were friends, were taken to the dean’s office.

According to the report, the dispute began over spring break in regards to alleged comments made on Facebook. Police issued the attacking teen a citation for disorderly conduct.

Vehicle break-ins

A sedan parked in the 3400 block of Main Street had its windshield smashed on April 4. According to the report, nothing was reported missing.

A mini van had its driver’s side window smashed while it was parked in the 8800 block of Monticello Avenue on April 4. No items were taken from the vehicle.

Several power tools were stolen from a van parked in the 8700 block of Skokie Boulevard on April 4. According to the report, several drills, valued at more than $1,300, were taken. Police are investigating the matter.
