Wednesday Blotter: Drug Cache Seized, Gunpoint Robbery

Drug cache arrest

The Skokie police's Tactical Mission Team, along with officers from Glenview, Lincolnwod and the Cook County Sheriff's Office, were involved in the arrest of a man who had a cache of drugs in his Glenview home.

 Rogelio Vargas-Garces, 24, was in custody on several felony charges that ranged from delivery of a controlled substance to unlawful possession of weapons.

Police executed a search warrant at a Glenview home and found more than 100 grams of marijuana, several grams of cocaine, rock cocaine and six pills of ecstasy. They also seized ammunition for shotguns and pistols.

Garces told police that he was selling drugs to help his mother with the bills around the house, where he lived with his two children. He confessed to selling marijuana, but said the ecstasy and cocaine were for personal use.

Police also charged him with unlawful possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a school. His court date is Nov. 15.

Road rage

On Nov. 6 around 5 p.m., officers responded to a road rage call near Dempster Street and Lowell Avenue. According to the report, the man said a black Nissan Altima almost hit his vehicle and when he confronted the driver, she began to throw jellybeans and a plastic bottle at him. The man recorded her licenses plate information and said he wanted to file battery charges against her. Police are investigating the matter.

Robbed at gunpoint 

A woman was held at gunpoint on Nov. 4 about 8 p.m. near the CVS Pharmacy at 3434 Dempster St. She told police that a man demanded her bag. After she refused, the suspect pointed a gun at her head, prompting her to hand over the bag. The suspect was described as black, 20-29 years of old, 6 feet 2 inches and had a thin build. Police are investigating the case.

Residential burglary

On Nov. 7 around 8 p.m., officers responded to a residential burglary in the 9400 block of Kostner Avenue. According to the report, entry was made through a basement window to stole a MacBook Pro, IBM Thinkpad and another older model laptop. Also missing are more than $250 cash and several ruby diamonds valued at $350. The combined value of the missing items is more than $3,500.

Former town employee robbed

A Village of Skokie Gold Watch, which was given to a man for more than 15 years of service to the town, was stolen from a home in the 5100 block of Harvard Terrace on Nov. 5. The owner told police that several other pieces of jewelry and a safety deposit box key were taken.

Purse theft spurs spree

A $900 Louis Vuitton handbag was stolen from Panera Bread at 9611 Skokie Blvd. on Nov. 6 about 7:20 p.m. A woman told police that she left her purse unattended on the floor to get dessert.  It was later learned that her credit card was used to purchase two items at Best Buy totaling $2,000. Police are investigating the matter.

DUI arrest

Oleg Karshiev, 43, of the 6900 block of Sheridan Road in Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on Nov. 5 around 11 p.m. Karshiev was stopped near Frontage Road and Brummel Avenue for a traffic violation. Karshiev refused to provide a breath sample, but showed obvious signs of intoxication, according to the report.

Theft from motor vehicles

On Nov. 6 around 5 p.m., officers responded to a theft from a motor vehicle near Nordstrom at Old Orchard Mall. According to the report, the passenger side was shattered on a Lincoln Aviator and an in-dash CD player as well as a charger and connector for an iPhone were stolen. Police are investigating the matter.

Another vehicle was burglarized near Nordstrom at Old Orchard Mall on Nov. 6. According to the report, entry was made by sliding a hand down an opened window. An iPhone, $20 in cash and a gym membership card were stolen.

On Nov. 5 around 8 a.m., officers responded to a theft from a motor vehicle near the 4900 block of Crain Avenue. According to the report, a six-inch chrome wheel cover was stolen from an SUV.
