Wednesday Blotter: Federal Reserve Scam

Theft at Macy’s

A juvenile was arrested after allegedly stealing multiple shirts from Macy’s in Old Orchard Mall on March 29. According to the report, the combined value of the items was around $190.

Deceptive kitchen charge

A man came into the Skokie police station to report a deceptive practice on Feb. 8. According to the report, an unknown person charged $2,442 from an online kitchen appliance website to a credit card in his name. The man told police he doesn’t even have Internet or any credit cards.

Federal Reserve Scam

A woman reported a deceptive practice after she wired $140 to who she thought was the Federal Reserve on March 22. According to the report, the victim received a phone call informing her that the government owes her $7,000, but that she had to wire $140 to receive the money. The incident was a scam, and the woman never received the money.

Out to lunch

A woman reported that her credit card was stolen after seeing an $8 charge at Portillo’s in Skokie on her statement on March 24. According to the report, the woman didn’t know her card was missing until she saw the charges.

Medallion snagged

A woman reported losing her gold medallion after dining at Sweety Pies in downtown Skokie on March 24. According to the report, the victim put the item in her coat pocket after showing it to a friend. When she returned home, she realized it was missing. The item was valued at around $1,000, the report noted.
