Young Father Killed In Evanston

The 21-year-old Evanston man who was shot and killed Tuesday night had a newborn baby girl and a second child on the way, according to NBC Chicago.

Cardereon Preister, a resident of the 1700 block of Leland Avenue in Evanston, was found shot in the back around 11 p.m. Tuesday night, according to police. Officers are still investigating the crime and searching for a suspect. 

"He always had a smile. He was a good kid, a really fun person to be around," Preister’s cousin told NBC Chicago.

Multiple people standing outside Preister’s home in the 1700 block of Leland Avenue declined to comment Wednesday morning, including a woman who identified herself as his mother.

Preister worked at Bryn Mawr Country Club in Lincolnwood as a seasonal employee with the grounds and greens department from May through July, according to controller Richard Scarlata.

He obtained the job through the city’s Youth & Young Adult Program Division, according to a testimonial on the site. The program helps provide workforce development, networking and housing to residents age 14 to 26, among other services. Program manager Kevin Brown directed questions to the city’s spokesperson, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Preister and another Evanston man were arrested and charged with residential burglary in March 2012 after they allegedly broke into a north side Evanston home, according to police. 

There is no record showing that he graduated from Evanston Township High School, according to a recordkeeper for ETHS.
