Bin Laden's Demise Creates Travel Concern

The State Department offered these tips when traveling outside of the U.S. Experts also weigh in their opinion.

Shortly after President Barack Obama announced the death of Osama bin Laden Sunday night, the State Department announced a warning to American citizens travelling abroad.

The State Department said U.S. citizens traveling and residing abroad should be alert of the potential of anti-American violence.

The State Department offered these tips:

  • Limit travel far from hotels or homes
  • Avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations
  • Stay current with media coverage
  • Be aware of surroundings at all times

According to Aol Travel, “Similar alerts have been issued for British and Australian citizens, particularly those in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country."

Mike Fagel, a professor at Northwestern University and contractor for Homeland Security, told U.S. citizens to stay “vigilante” on NBC Chicago earlier this morning.

“It’s very likely that the entire nation will experience a very high degree of alertness in next 24-48 hours,” Fagel told NBC. “There may be copy cats out there, [or there] may be people on the fringe that are waiting for the one element to push them over the edge.”

He added that people America’s travel sector is "well equipped" and that they are doing “everything they can do.” 

“Don’t panic,” Fagel said. “Enjoy life.”
