FORUM ON PENSION REFORM IN ILLINOIS

Local Pension Accountability Tour: Skokie Debate

Local pension accountability – the concept of moving the “employer” share of teacher pension costs from state government to school districts – is a hot topic in Illinois right now. Generally speaking, state Democratic leaders have promoted the policy, while Republicans have expressed skepticism.

A new poll from the Illinois Policy Institute shows that the voting public has mixed feelings about the concept, with surprising similarity across parties. A significant segment of voters remain undecided. People have mixed opinions about whether it will result in higher property taxes or if the cost can be absorbed. Will it promote accountability, or simply shift the problem?
