Skokie Hosts Bicycle Safety Day June 2

Skokie Public Safety Commission will partner with Skokie/Morton Grove District 69 on the 2013 Carter Vo Memorial Bike Ride/ Walk starting at 9:30 a.m.

Skokie Public Safety Commission will host its annual Bicycle Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, in the parking lot at Oakton Park, according to a press release.   

The event features bike registration, safety tips and activities to promote bicycle and pedestrian safety from the Skokie Park DistrictSkokie Police Department and Skokie Fire Department.

The commission will partner with Skokie/Morton Grove District 69 and other community agencies on the 2013 Carter Vo Memorial Bike Ride/Walk, which starts at 9:30 a.m. at the north end of the Skokie Valley Trail near the Dempster Street Swift station. The ride/walk will proceed south on the trail to Oakton Street and then east to Oakton Park.   

In May 2012, Skokie resident Hanin Goma caused a three-car accident that ultimately took the life of 9-year-old Carter Vo.The accident occurred at the intersection of Main Street and St. Louis Avenue.   

The unfortunate incident happened after Goma finished her shift working as a cashier at Grecian Kitchen, according to police. Goma then made a right turn to head eastbound on Main Street when another vehicle struck her car. In the end, Goma's vehicle would lose control and hit Vo who was across the street on his bicycle.
