Skokie Trustee Elections Are Tomorrow: Tidbits and Factoids

The stakes are very high for all candidates running for village trustee. Election Day is Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

Cook County Clerk David Orr said he’s expecting a low voter turnout this April 9th. While that may be true in other parts of Cook County, that’s certainly not the case in Skokie: All six trustee seats are open for election and there are nine candidates running.

According to voting information, more than 1,200 area residents voted early at Skokie Village Hall, 5127 Oakton St., between March 25 and April 6 . That  number is just from Village Hall. There were several other locations that offered early voting.

In addition, 132 people have requested absentee ballots, and six people asked for “grace period votes.”

The Caucus Party has three incumbents seeking reelection – Edie Sue Sutker, Michele Bromberg and Randy Roberts. The group has also slated three newcomers: Karen Gray-Keeler, Ilonka Ulrich and Ralph Klein.

For more than four decades, the Caucus Party has controlled all six trustee seats. The last time they were challenged was in 2001 by a group called the Community Vision Party.

Following Election Day in 2001, the Skokie Review published a story titled, Caucus Party Crushes Community Vision Party.

This election season, however, the Caucus Party is facing some legitimate contenders.

Lisa Lipin and Brian Novak have been making some noise, and this could be the first time in decades that the Caucus Party loses its control of all six seats. At the same time, the duo is facing an uphill battle when it comes to campaign contributions:

Also running is Independent Vincent Romano.

Skokie Patch spoke to all candidates and asked them the same questions. You can read our candidate profiles here.
