Skokie's First Mosque May Open In Former Holocaust Museum Building

The Skokie Plan Commission okayed the idea Thursday.

A plan to open Skokie's first mosque at 4255 Main Street was unanimously approved by the Skokie Plan Commission Thursday, according to the Skokie Review.

The building has been vacant since 2008, and formerly housed the Holocaust Museum. The Holocaust Museum, now called the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center,  moved to a new location north of Golf Road.

The Skokie village board will have final say over whether the village will grant a special use permit to allow the proposed mosque to open on the Main Street site. As of Friday afternoon, the agenda for the board's Monday, Aug. 5 meeting did not contain the item, so it will likely be considered at a later meeting.
