Tonight: Skokie Voice to Host Annual Meeting

More than two years ago, a dozen or so people started a grassroots movement to improve communication between the Village of Skokie and its residents.

That group has since blossomed, and has been a driving force regarding a variety of issues, from local crime to property taxes and even schools, among other things. Their presence was most notably known on July 24, 2010, when the group hosted a town hall forum at Niles West High School. The turnout was far bigger than anyone expected, as the auditorium was packed to the brim.

Almost three years later, the group will be holding its annual meeting tonight, Monday Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Oakton Community Center, 4701 Oakton St.

Changing local history? 

Meanwhile, one of Skokie Voice's founding members will be running for Village Trustee this April. Lisa Lipin is hoping to accomplish something that hasn't been done in more than half-a-century: Be the first Skokie trustee that is not affiliated with the Caucus Party. It should be noted, however, that Lipin is running as an independent and is not associating herself with Skokie Voice for the upcoming local elections.

Skokie Voice school forum on Comcast -

On Nov. 15, Skokie Voice held an open event titled, Our Taxes, Our Schools. Residents who were unable to attend the event can now catch it on Comcast this December.

The program will air on the following dates and times on channel 35 on Comcast:

• Monday, Dec. 10, 9 p.m.
• Monday, Dec. 17, 7 p.m.
• Monday, Jan. 7, 7 p.m.
• Monday, Jan. 14, 7 p.m.

The forum was an opportunity for residents and businesses to obtain information explaining how their property taxes are assessed and utilized by Skokie public schools, for example.
