District 303 Honors Donald DeWitte, Michael Hood, and Dr. Jon Miller

St. Charles Community Unit School District 303, Distinguished Alumni Award Committee and and the Greater St. Charles Education Foundation to honor three at Feb. 23 jazz event.

St. Charles Mayor Donald DeWitte, Michael Hood, and Dr. Jon Miller on Tuesday were named the recipients of the St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 Distinguished Alumni Award for 2013.

The school district, the Distinguished Alumni Award Committee and the Greater St. Charles Education Foundation said in a release that the award is given to nominees who graduated from District 303 and have demonstrated a high level of achievement in their field of endeavor or in their contributions to their community.

DeWitte, a lifelong resident of St. Charles, graduated from St. Charles High School in 1972. He has worked his entire professional career in the building materials industry. He was elected to the St. Charles City Council as an alderman in May, 1993. He was re-elected to this position in 1997 and 2001. At various times, he chaired every standing committee of the City Council emphasizing Public Works and Public Safety.

In 2005, DeWitte became St. Charles’ 17th mayor and has served two terms, during which he has been involved in numerous regional organizations including the DuPage Mayors’ and Managers’ Conference, the Metropolitan Mayors’ Caucus, and the MetroWest Council of Government, serving as president from 2007-08.

Hood graduated from St. Charles High School in 1983. He serves as deputy attorney general for criminal justice in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. While attending law school at DePaul University, he joined the Marine Corps, eventually achieving the rank of major. In 1997, Hood earned a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for meritorious service while serving as staff judge advocate.

During Operation Desert Storm, he was deployed to the Persian Gulf where he served as staff judge advocate. After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, he joined the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office as an assistant state’s attorney. In 2006, Hood was named Illinois Prosecutor of the Year by the Illinois Prosecutors Bar Association.

Dr. Miller graduated from St. Charles High School in 1993. He is an associate professor and graduate chair of astronomy at the University of Michigan. After graduating from St. Charles, Miller attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he would graduate magna cum laude with a degree in physics. In 2002, he received his doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was part of a research team at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics that discovered two midsized black holes.

Miller has given lectures and speeches nationally and internationally, most notably at the NASA Goddard Scientific Colloquium in March, 2011. He is published several times including 34 first author refereed journal papers.

The 2013 recipients will be recognized at the Greater St. Charles Education Foundation’s Night of Jazz event which will be held Feb. 23, 2013, at the St. Charles Country Club.
