Crosstown Classic: West vs North Basketball

Niles West's girls basketball team lost its first game of the season and both gymnastics teams are starting off their season.

Just like last year, Niles West swept Niles North in the Crosstown Classic with both the boys and girls basketball teams recording victories.

In the boys game, Niles West edged the Vikings 60-57 at home thanks to a 13-5 run late in the fourth quarter. Ahmad Gibson had 15 points to lead Niles West while Malachi Nix had a game-high 25 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter.

On the girls side things were a little less dramatic. Jewell Loyd scored 39 points and Niles West outpaced the Vikings 49-38. Niles West came back from a nine-point deficit at halftime as Loyd put up 26 points in the second half. Alissa Hirsh led the Vikings with 20 points.

Girls Basketball: It may be a different season, but it’s the same story for Niles West against Maine South. The Hawks defeated Niles West for the fourth consecutive game, holding on for a 66-55 victory in Park Ridge to give Niles West its first loss of the season on Dec. 9. Jewell Loyd had 29 points in the loss.

The Wolves’ first loss of the season overshadowed a dominant 45-23 win over New Trier earlier in the week. Niles West’s win gave New Trier its first loss on the year.

Boys Basketball: After a big victory over Niles North, the Wolves stumbled in their two CSL South contests. Niles West fell to New Trier (58-47) and Maine South (43-39).

The Wolves will try and get back on the right track with a road game against Notre Dame on Dec. 13 and a home game vs. Evanston on Dec. 16.

Girls Gymnastics: Niles West finished fifth in the 11-team Glenbrook North Spartan Classic last weekend. Senior Jenny Marin was 12th in the all-around (33.00 points), including a 10th-place finish on beam (8.45). The Wolves’ highest finish as a team came on beam (31.15) where they finished third.

Girls Basketball: The Vikings garnered two big conference wins last week, defeating Highland Park and Glenbrook North.

Niles North edged Highland Park 42-38 and defeated Glenbrook North 50-47 in overtime.

The Vikings take on Glenbrook South on Dec. 13 and get back into conference play by hosting Maine West on Dec. 16.

Boys Basketball: Ever since Malachi Nix’s ankle injury, Niles North hasn’t been the same. The Vikings have dropped four straight, including a 67-39 loss to Glenbrook North in their Central Suburban League North opener. B.J. Beckford and Malachi Nix each had 12 points on the night to lead Niles North and Billy Voitik added six.

Niles North lost a tough game to Highland Park on the road Friday night, falling 42-38 to the Giants. Nix had 15 points for the Vikings.

Last year, Niles North also struggled through December, but rallied in the second half of the season to put together the school’s best finish in history.

Girls Gymnastics: Junior Elana Rusnak took 21st (31.25) in the all-around competition at the Spartan Classic last weekend. Her highest individual event came on vault where she took eighth (8.75).
