Solomon Schechter Fourth Graders Capture First in State Math Meet
Team also placed eighth out of 978 schools in national competition.
A lot of hard work and diligence added up to success for seven math whizzes from the North Shore's Solomon Schechter Day School.
The fourth-grade math team placed first in the state in a recent competition and eighth out of 978 schools nationally. The contests were sponsored by the Math League.
These events challenged students to show their understanding of basic math principles through numerical and world problems.

Each contest consists of 30 multiple-choice questions that students could do in 30 minutes, and included fractions, algebra, story problems, prime number questions.
The students met once a week during lunch hour and went through their paces with Coach Robert Cogan.

“They performed practice tests each week and by the end they had advanced to the fifth grade tests,” Cogan said.
When he told the students they would be competing nationally they were excted and wanted to do well for the school.
“This was a team effort, and I am so proud of them for their determination, their great attitude, and their commitment to their school,” he said.
Team members were: Adam Budin, Deerfield; Josh Winick, Deerfield; Jason Ross, Winnetka; Noah Willis, Glenview; Aaron Brown, Skokie; Jacob Rosen, Northbrook and Sam Mitchell, Northbrook.
