Students at Niles West Head to Intel's Biggest Event

Students from Niles West High School won first place and more than 30 awards at the Illinois Junior Academy Regional Fair recently.

Niles West competed at the regional Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) Regional Fair on Saturday, March 9 at Niles North High School.  Niles West earned first place in the high school division, 30 projects earned gold awards and 36 students qualified for the IJAS State Exposition to be held May 3 and 4 at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

Felicia Phan and Patrick Liscio were selected to represent Region 6 at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world’s largest pre-college celebration of science. The ISEF will be held in Phoenix, Ariz., on May 12 and May 17.

The ISEF brings together nearly 1,500 students from more than 70 countries to showcase their talent on an international stage. Students will submit their work to judging by doctoral level scientists - and have the opportunity to compete for scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and the grand prize of a $50,000 scholarship

Best in Category plaques were awarded to: Rachel Sison, Zoology; Ryan Cyriac, Health Science; Sebastian Chirayil, Chemistry; and Anne McCarthy and Kristine Park, Biochemistry. 

Students who received gold awards and qualified for state:  Aimen Lateef and Dimitha Purba, Aisha Patel and Ashly Pinarkyil, Anam Furrukh, Anna Chlopecki, Ariella Halevi, Bakir Dzananovic, Christopher Matei, Cindy Chen, Elisabeth Schapmann and Hannah Tinder, Felicia Phan, Hirrah Khatri, Jessica Govis, Jordan Shaker, Kristine Park and Anne McCarthy, KylaRose Schulman, Lynn Vo, Natalie Palmer and Jensy Joseph, Patrick Liscio, Peter Kundzicz, Rachel Sison, Raphael Lagoc, Reyvin Reyes, Rudolf Newman, Ryan Cyriac, Ryan Firozabadi, Sareeni Ali, Sebastian Chirayil, Valerie Chuy and Nicolle Viloria, Wasan Kumar and Zarin Sultana.
