Two Niles West Drama Students Chosen For High Honor

Plus, 80 debate teams from four states converge Niles North next weekend for a tournament; and a Sept. 28 rummage sale will benefit Niles North's Fine Arts.

TWO NILES WEST STUDENTS SELECTED FOR HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE FESTIVAL

Two Niles West High School students have been chosen to be a part of the 2014 Illinois High School Theatre Festival All-State company of “The Grapes of Wrath.” After a rigorous application and interview process, seniors Daniel Bedoya and Lila Gilbert were selected to join 25 other students as part of the stage crew for the upcoming production.  The entire
company of “The Grapes of Wrath” consists of 57 high school theatre students from the state of Illinois.  Being a company member of the annual All-State performance is considered to be the highest achievement a student can gain in high school theatre in Illinois. “The Grapes of Wrath” will be presented in January 2014 at Illinois State University as a part of the 39th Annual Illinois High School Theatre Festival.

THE FOURTH ANNUAL NILES TOWNSHIP INVITATIONAL BRINGS TOGETHER MORE THAN 80 DEBATE TEAMS

More than 80 teams from four different states will attend the Fourth annual Niles Township Invitational Debate Tournament held onSeptember 13 through 15 at Niles North High School, 9800 Lawler, Skokie. This event is co-hosted by the Niles North Debate and Niles West Debate teams and their respective Debate Parents under the direction of Eric Oddo, Speech and Debate Coordinator and Katie Gjerpen, Niles North Head Debate Coach. The tournament is a Finals Tournament of Champions Bid in Policy Debate. Elimination rounds will begin on Saturday evening with the championship round occurring on Sunday afternoon. A Novice Workshop will be held on Saturday, September 14 and coordinated by Tara Tate, Director of Debate at Glenbrook South High School.

This year’s topic is Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its economic engagement toward Cuba, Mexico or Venezuela.

Money raised through the tournament will provide debate students summer camp scholarship opportunities at universities such as Northwestern University, Michigan State University, Georgetown University and Dartmouth College.

RUMMAGE SALE TO BENEFIT NILES NORTH FINE ARTS HELD ON SEPTEMBER 28

The Niles North Fine Arts Parents and Patrons (NNFAPP) is hosting a rummage sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 28 in the Niles North parking lot, 9800 North Lawler, Skokie. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Niles North Fine Arts department and fund student grants.

Gently used items for donation will be accepted on Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28 (before the sale begins). Electronic items and computers will not be accepted for donation.
