School:  Niles West High School

Accomplishments:  Doug Bako led the Niles West a cappella group Echo Effect to a first place finish at the International Championships of High School A Cappella Great Lakes Semifinal competition in Clarkston, Michigan last month. The win would later earn them an invitation to compete at the National Finals in New York City. At the semifinal, Bako was named as the Best Vocal Percussionist, and Echo Effect won the Best Choreography award.  Echo Effect is one of just 10 high school a cappella ensembles competing in the big apple this weekend for the title of best in the nation.

Key to Awesomeness:  “Doug is a very talented musician. He plays guitar and piano and is an amazing vocal percussionist,”   said Amy Branahl, Niles West teacher and choir director. “Doug has a deep understanding of musical form and keeps the music going in the right direction. He is the glue that keeps the group together.”

Bako credits much of his ability and love of music to his dad, who was a musician in his native Iraq. “My dad plays guitar and piano. I grew up surrounded by music, especially traditional Assyrian music,” Bako said. “Here in the United States, my dad doesn’t get the chance to perform much publically.  I know my accomplishments make him very happy, and that motivates me to work very hard and be the best musician I can be.”

Before major performances, Bako and Echo Effect rehearse at least four hours a day after classes. Bako loves working with his fellow Echo Effect members, many of whom have been his friends since grade school.

Bako plans to make music a major part of his life. And while college is still a few years away, Bako said he plans to major in music or performing arts.

“It’s just a lot of fun working and performing with these guys,” Bako said. “I am really excited about the upcoming trip to New York City, which will be my first time there.”
