Uber, a new on-demand, smartphone-friendly taxi service is launching in Skokie, as well as nearby suburbs,  in its first expansion outside of Chicago and Evanston.

Uber, which started offering its service in Chicago two years ago, lets people order up a taxi from an app on their phone and pay for it with a credit card number pre-loaded to their account.
The company is offering free rides to anyone coming from or going to the area, which includes Skokie, Niles, Wilmette and Park Ridge, through Dec. 1.

A representative from the company explained how the free rides will work: Enter promo code NORTHCHI for one free UberBLACK ride, up to $40. The trip must begin or end in the specified suburbs.
