Viking Football Notebook

George Neuhaus is Mr. Everything for the Vikings.

A player starting on both offense and defense is fairly common in high school. But add in special teams duties and kicker responsibilities, and you won't find too many football players with the energy or talent to do so.

Yet that's what exactly what George Neuhaus did Friday night for Niles North, and what Coach Scott Smith plans for his senior linebacker all season. In addition to being Niles' center on offense and linebacker on defense, Neuhaus does the punting and kicking duties for the Vikings.

Only in the last five minutes of the game against Elk Grove did Neuhaus come off the field for an extended period of time.

"[My energy level] was fine. You get tired, but it was fine," Neuhaus said after the game.

Because the offense struggled against Elk Grove, Neuhaus was called on to punt several times Friday night. Neuhaus largely called Elk Grove's return game and his longest punt of the night was a first-quarter kick for 36 yards.

Sophomore Slump: The Vikings' sophomore squad failed to get on the scoreboard Friday night, losing 41-0 to a strong and deep Elk Grove team.

Bumps and Bruises: With only 28 students on the roster, potential injuries are a major concern for Coach Smith. Myron Johnson came off the field holding his right wrist after a rushing attempt in the fourth quarter. He said his wrist was fine after the game.

Rivalry Week: Niles North faces Niles West in a Saturday afternoon battle next weekend. The game will take place at Niles West at 1 p.m.
