Niles West Sports Roundup: Boys Golf Continues to Impress

Football loses a chance to go 3-1 while Edan Scott wins 2 swimming events for the Wolves.

Boys Golf: Niles West split its two dual matches last week, defeating Waukegan before losing to Central Suburban League (CSL) South rival New Trier. Nate Lee took home medalist honors, shooting a 37 in the Wolves’ 161-176 win over Waukegan. But Niles West couldn’t hang with New Trier, losing 152-166.

The Wolves finished 14th in the 25-team Chevy Chase Invitational on Sept. 17. The Wolves shot 340, beating fellow CSL South teams Evanston (344) and Maine South (353). Lake Forest won the tournament by shooting a 301. Niles West was only eight shots outside of the top 10.

Nick Hester shot a 37 in a tri-meet against Mundelein and Niles North to lead Niles West to a win and earn medalist honors on Sept. 19. Niles West (152) edged Mundelein (153) and outdistanced the rival Vikings (203).

Boys Soccer: Niles West had a rough week, losing three times--two of which were by one goal. The Wolves lost to Glenbrook South 1-0 on a penalty kick and fell to Deerfield 2-1. In the consolation bracket of the Pepsi Showdown, Niles West lost to Bartlett 5-2.

Girls Volleyball: Niles West went 1-1 in its two CSL South matches , falling to New Trier and defeating Waukegan. Niles West took the first game against New Trier, but the Trevians rallied to win 11-25, 25-20, 25-18. The Wolves easily cruised to a win 25-4, 25-6 against Waukegan.

Football: Niles West lost a big chance for a victory against Highland Park, losing 47-14. Though a record of 2-2 is a vast improvement from last season, it has the feel of disappointment for some.

Now, Niles West enters the tough CSL South, which features four teams that are playing very well early in the season. Niles West goes on the road to Waukegan on Sept. 23, possibly its best chance at a conference win.

Girls Tennis: Evanston edged Niles West 4-3 in a CSL South dual match on Sept. 15. Analise Vujica won at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-3 over Evanston’s Joan Gibbons and Kathie Chleboun rallied to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Alexa Bits and Kristine Park also won in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.

Wheeling defeated Niles West 5-2 on Sept. 19.

Girls Swimming: Sophomore Edan Scott had two first-place finishes at the Spartan Sprint Classic to lead Niles West. Scott won the 50-yard butterfly (27.02 seconds) and 25-yard freestyle (11.49).

Niles West’s other top-five performance was the 200-yard medley relay, which the team placed fourth. Scott, Emma Helgeson, Abby Hegberg and Zoe Antonow combined to finish in 1 minute, 57.98 seconds.
