Niles West Sports Roundup: Fall Teams Gear Up For Postseason

Two Niles West golfers advanced to the sectional championships while tennis finished fourth in the Central Suburban League South.

Girls Tennis: Niles West finished tied for fourth overall in the CSL South this season after a strong showing in the final regular season tournament.

The Wolves accrued 16 points over the course of the season’s dual meets and season-ending tournament, finishing behind champion New Trier (54), Glenbrook South (44) and Maine South (31). Niles West tied Evanston and beat out Waukegan (.5).

The Wolves’ No. 1 doubles team of Alexa Bits and Kristine Park was the top-scoring team for Niles West at the CSL South tournament, finishing third after a win over Evanston’s Lydia Collins and Caroline Cary.

No. 1 singles player Analise Vujica took fourth place with a win over Evanston’s Joan Gibbons in the first round while No. 2 singles player Katie Chleboun also took fourth place with a first-round win.

Boys Golf: Niles West finished seventh out of nine teams at the Class 3A Notre Dame Regional tournament, shooting a combined score of 340 at Mission Hills Country Club in Northbrook. Although Niles West did not advance as a team, senior Nick Hester and sophomore Nate Lee qualified for the Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional as individuals.

New Trier won the regional title with a 309, seven shots clear of Loyola Academy (316) and Evanston (321), who also advanced as a team.

Hester (79) and Lee (84) both advanced to sectionals last season with Lee making it to state.

Seniors David Lotsof (91) and John Sullivan (98) were also counted in the team score while juniors Brandon Moy (101) and Jacob Malina (102) were Niles West’s last two competitors.

Cross Country: Marc Julien and Neal Omar garnered top-five finishes at the Pat Savage Invitational on Oct. 1 to help Niles West win the White Division.

In true cross country conditions with mud and strong winds, Omar placed third in a time of 15 minutes 52 seconds while Julien was fourth in 16:00 on the three-mile course.

On the girls side, the Wolves took fifth place (105).  Niles West was led by Michelle Karp (20:18) and Rachel Bender (20:27), who placed 15th and 16th respectively.

The CSL Championships will be held on Oct. 15 at Glenbrook South.

Football: Niles West suffered its third consecutive loss in a 35-7 defeat at the hands of New Trier. The Wolves could not get their offense going in the first half, gaining only one first down.

Niles West’s only score came on a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by junior wide receiver Jeremiah Jordan late in the second quarter to cut New Trier’s lead to 14-7. But the Trevians would score 21 unanswered points in the second half, knocking Niles West out of playoff contention.

Boys Soccer: earned the No. 5 seed in the Class 3A Evanston Sectional. The Wolves will start the playoffs against No. 12 Niles North in the regional semifinals on Oct. 18 at Niles North.

Volleyball: Niles West earned the No. 6 seed in the Class 4A Glenview Sectional. New Trier garnered the No. 1 seed. The complete playoff brackets can be found here.
