Patch's Football Rankings - Week 3

The Vikings jumped two spots after Niles North and Niles West took two days to complete their game.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best football teams.

The second batch of high school football games proved to be a little better than the opening week for our Patch teams. Maine South and Loyola Academy both beat ranked opponents while New Trier and Evanston had a pair of surprising victories. We also debut the ranking of North Shore Country Day School, which sits at No. 3.

WEEK 3 RANKINGS

1. Loyola Academy (2) – The Ramblers put up an impressive victory against Montini, winning an offensive affair 41-24. Quarterback Malcolm Weaver passed for five touchdowns and rushed for another as the Ramblers take over the top spot in our power rankings. The team is now 2-0 after beating Evanston 40-0 in its previous game.

2.  (1) – The Hawks got a victory in a much-anticipated rematch with Wheaton-Warrenville South, . However, Maine South’s offense was less-than-impressive and will be something to keep an eye on against better defenses.

3.  (NR) – The Raiders got their first victory against Alden-Hebron in 10 years, and they did it in resounding fashion. North Shore went up 41-0 at the half and ended up with a 41-21 win. It is now 2-0 on the season.

4.  (4) – The Spartans got an easy bounce-back win against Lane Tech 42-12. Grant Rushing added two more rushing touchdowns and quarterback Curt Petty was efficient, throwing for three touchdowns and only one interception on 16 pass attempts.

5.  (5) – The Trevians forced five turnovers against Warrenen route to a 21-7 victory. QB Jack Nykaza had another two-interception game, but New Trier’s defense helped out the offense with six pickoffs. The Trevians should have a good shot at getting to 2-1 when they face Highland Park on Friday.

6.  (3) – The Titans put up a solid effort against Stevenson, but fell 17-15 as the offense was unable to get much going. QB Mac Zabriskie threw the ball 25 times on Friday night, which shows that coach Mike Noll isn’t going to solely rely on Glenbrook South’s running game.

7.  (9) – After Week 1’s debacle against Oak Lawn, Niles North will certainly take the unusual 2-0 win against its cross-town rival Niles West. The defense was suffocating, but we’ll have to see how QB Billy Voitik’s ankle recovers for next week’s game against Waukegan.

8.  (10) – Buoyed by two consecutive kickoff returns for touchdowns and a pair of Zion-Benton safeties, the Wildkits evened their record at 1-1 with a 32-15 win. The advantage on special teams was enough to overcome Evanston’s offensive woes as QB Max Block was only six for 15 in passing.

9.  (7) – The Wolves blew a huge opportunity to start the season with two victories in their 2-0 loss to Niles North--the game was completed Monday due to inclement weather on Saturday. Niles West couldn’t muster anything on offense even though its defense shut out a Viking offense that was using its backup quarterback late in the game.

10.  (6) – Not a lot of things went right for Deerfield in the Warriors’ 47-0 loss to Homewood-Flossmoor. It was a crucial game as the Warriors face Maine South this week and could soon be facing the tough task of trying to secure a playoff spot after starting 0-3 in the nine-game season.

11.  (11) – Maine West is still trying to find a stable quarterback and it didn’t happen in the Warriors’ 28-7 loss to Fenton on the road. Danny O’Hara was the starter, but backup Jake Korbecki played the majority of the game and had Maine West’s lone touchdown.

12.  (8) – It was  as Lake Forest went up by 41 points before finishing with a 41-8 win against the Giants. Highland Park faces New Trier this week and better find a way to challenge the Trevian defense through the air or it could be looking at 0-3.
