Patch's Football Rankings - Week 5

Niles North and West teams come out big losers, toppling in Patch's latest rankings.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best football teams.

Going into the fifth week of games, the North Shore teams are showing some separation from the top to the bottom as New Trier, Glenbrook South and Evanston again were impressive. Highland Park and Deerfield got their first victories of the season and the Central Suburban League (CSL) North is turning out to be anyone’s conference. At this point, there is little difference between Loyola and Maine South, but both teams will face decent opponents in the upcoming weeks.

WEEK 5 RANKINGS

1. Loyola Academy (1) – The Ramblers proved they are more than just the Malcolm Weaver Show with a dominating rushing performance against Providence. Running back William Palivos had 122 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns in the Ramblers’ 32-6 win.

2.  (2) – Maine South heads into CSL South play on a roll, defeating Niles North 42-6 last week. The Hawks will still be the big favorites, but they’ll get a good test this week against New Trier in their conference opener.

3. (4) – The Trevians picked a good week to put together their most dominating performance of the season in a 62-0 rout of Maine West. Quarterback Jack Nykaza was 8-8 passing, but will face a stiff Maine South defense Friday as the Trevians will try and pull out the conference’s biggest upset of the decade.

4.  (3) – Another week and another win for North Shore as the Raiders pounded Luther North 42-8 for their fourth consecutive victory. North Shore should take its next two games before battling it out for a conference title in the last three weeks of the season.

5.  (5) – In their final tune-up before CSL South play, the Titans got a dominating 63-12 victory against Maine East. Glenbrook South gets a big test right away when it faces Evanston on the road.

6.  (6) – With each passing week, Evanston becomes more and more impressive. The Wildkits dismantled Glenbrook North 35-7 to end their nonconference schedule. Ray Bahr had three touchdowns as Evanston earned its third straight win.

7.  (11) – What a difference a quarterback can make. Brad Holway made his presence felt immediately, leading the Warriors to  for Deerfield’s first win of the season.

8.  (7) – The Spartans  against Evanston. A 1-3 start to the season means Glenbrook North likely will have to win five straight games to make the playoffs, a tall order even in the CSL North.

9.  (8) – After a win in Week 3, Niles West certainly did not carry any momentum into the conference season. Jeremiah Jordan remains the lone bright spot for the Wolves, scoring both touchdowns in the loss to the Highland Park.

10.  (12) – The Giants got off the snide for their first win of the season with . Junior running back Andrew Sledd had six touchdowns for Highland Park as the Giants take on Maine West this week in their CSL North opener.

11. (9) – Even with a 1-3 record, Niles North is still a viable candidate to take home the CSL North championship. In order to do that, the Vikings will have to get QB Billy Voitik back on the field and establish more offensive threats in addition to Oshayne Brown.

12. (10) – Maine West hopes the CSL North section of its schedule is a little more friendly than its out-of-conference portion. The Warriors fell 62-0 to New Trier and lost a couple more players to injuries. The team faces Highland Park this week.
