Phil Humber: A Look at a 'Perfect' Career

An unlikely candidate, Chicago White Sox pitcher Philip Humber threw a perfect game against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. He is the third White Sox pitcher to do so, and 21st MLB player to throw a perfect game.

It was his 30th Major League Start. And prior to the game, he only had 11 career wins.

But Chicago White Sox pitcher Philip Humber threw a perfect game against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. He is the third White Sox pitcher to do so, joining Mark Buehrle (2009) and Charles Robertson (1922).

It is as the 21st perfect game in MLB history, with the last coming from Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay in 2010. Humber’s perfect game is also the first in Major League Baseball for the 2012 season.

Humber received Tommy John surgery prior to his career in the majors. He was also one of four prospects traded to Minnesota Twins in the blockbuster trade for Cy Young winner Johan Santana in 2008.

“I don’t even know what to say,” Humber told the media after the game. “I don’t know what Philip Humber is doing in this list. No idea what my name is doing there, but I’m thankful it’s there.”

Originally drafted No. 3 overall in 2004 by the New York Mets, Humber saw little action as he needed surgery following his rookie year.

His fellow teammate and catcher, A.J. Pierzynski, got to call his second perfect game after catching for former teammate Buehrle.

“I was more nervous that I was in the World Series,” the catcher said. “There was no build up for this, it just happened. And you want it so bad for the guy on the mound and you want him to have that achievement forever and you want to have him remembered forever.”
