Snapshot: Whiffleball Tourney Pictorial

More than 50 teams hit Skokie's Channelside Park for national championship games.

Channelside Park was teeming with action Saturday as the large field just south of Main Street played host to the National Whiffleball Championship.  This is the third year Skokie has held the event.

From 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., teams of varying ages and abilities competed for the championship's title. While the action occurred on the ball field, a number of supporters gathered on the sidelines to root for friends and family members.

The Skokie games are an offshoot of the World Whiffleball Championship, which has been held annually in June in Mishawaka, IN, since 1980.

"We've got a lot of local teams, but also have people from Arizona, California, Indiana, Colorado, New York. . .a nice mix of teams," said JIm Bortoff, event organizer and spokesman for the Skokie Park District.

"It's whiffleball, so we encourage people young and old to take part," he added. "It's a nice equalizer kind of game.  There's a competitive level and there's a not so competitive level. But we all play each other and at the end of the day the best teams compete."
