Whiz Kid: Andre Shaw aka Mr. Buzzer Beater

Name:  Andre Shaw

Age: 18

Grade: Senior

School:  Niles North High School

Accomplishment:  Scored a game high 21 points and hit lifting the Niles North basketball team to a 48-46 victory over Deerfield and enabling it to capture its first Central Suburban League North Conference championship since 2000.  Shaw’s defense, rebounding , overall physical play and leadership have been instrumental to the squad’s 22-6 season one of the best in Niles North history.

Key To Awesomeness:  “ My motivation is to do what’s best for the team, and that means working as hard as I can and trying to lead by example," Shaw said. "Last year was a puzzle, but this year it’s all come together and we all know our roles and where the pieces fit.  I try to make sure that we are all on the same page, and that we are always supporting each other.”

Vikings head basketball coach Glenn Olson said Andre's play has been a huge key in the team's resurgence.    

“His fundamentals are impeccable and he is a superb all around player, but  Andre also brings a host of intangible assets to the table as well," Olson said. "He has a lot of smarts and a deep understanding of the game, as well as a knack for bringing out the best in his teammates.  He just does all the right things."  

Shaw’s accomplishments are not limited just to the hardwood. 

“Andre was an  all conference volleyball player as a junior and he epitomizes the term student athlete," added Niles North Athletic Director  Karl Costello.

For now, Shaw’s focus is to extend the Niles North basketball post-season past its next round of opponents.

“Our team’s success is built is on a foundation of  trust, and we know that if we play our game anything is possible,” Shaw said.
