Prolific local filmmaker Joe Swanberg premieres two new films about young relationships in flux. In “Marriage Material” (2012, 55 min.), a young couple, played by Kentucker Audley and Caroline White, babysit for visiting friends, played by Joe and Kris Swanberg and their son Jude, at their home in Memphis. The simple favor gradually opens a Pandora’s box of issues about marriage, family and commitment that leads them to reckon with their future together. In “Caitlin Plays Herself” (2011, 58 min.), a young actress, played by Neo-Futurist member Caitlin Stainken, struggles to break out of a chronic holding pattern embodied by a casual boyfriend who likes being intimate but dislikes her provocative performances. Both films display Swanberg’s distinctive improvisational style where casual scenarios and everyday characters are embedded with contemporary truths.

The Fifth Wall

The Fringe Theater Company is proud to present their first show “The Fifth Wall”! The play was written by Mandy Thoenen, choreographed by Caroline Lindsey, directed by Stefani Lah, and assistant directed by Tyler Nelson. The Fifth Wall follows the lives of two very different girls in very similar situations: Emma, a vibrant, strong-willed girl living in the early 1900's and Aime, her quietly angry modern counterpart. Both girls have an insensitive mother, a distant father, and a loving-but-absent older sibling- a sibling whose return and imminent wedding throws the girls' lives into chaos. Alternately set between the early 1900's and present day, the story follows one life changing summer in Emma and Aime's worlds. The summer progresses and their parallel lives spin away from each other as Aime comes out of her shell and Emma struggles with a love triangle between her sister, her sister's fiance, and her old friend Sam. And then the delicate balancing acts perfected by the two families collapse around their ears.
