Topic of Red Light Camera Expansion On Skokie's Agenda
Plus, meet an astronaut, weatherize your home, and see a famous, and slightly sinister, musical.
- Red light cameras take a photo of your license plate if the yellow light you're sailing through on in an intersection turns red--and sometimes if you don't stop behind a certain line on the pavement. Then you get a fine. Red light camera expansion is on Skokie's village board meeting agenda for Monday, Nov. 4 at 8 p.m.
- Ever met an astronaut? How about a commander of the International Space Station? Colonel Chris Hadfield is coming to Barnes & Noble Wednesday to talk about life in space, and sign copies of his book, An Astronaut's Guide To Life On Earth.
- Don't let winter's cold run up your heating bill this year. A "Home Weatherization" workshop lets you get hands-on practice at weather-stripping, caulking, etc., and the presenter will talk about grants you can get for bigger energy-efficiency projects. At Emily Oaks Nature Center, Skokie, Wednesday at 7 p.m. Register.
- "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" is an 18th century Englishman with a very unconventional way of making meat pies--a scandalous one, in fact. See the renowned musical of his nefarious adventures Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 8, 9, 16 and 17, when the Devonshire Playhouse, 4400 Greenwood, Skokie, presents it with an orchestra. The plot: Sweeney Todd, returns to London after serving 15 years in prison on trumped-up charges. He soon finds out that his wife poisoned herself after being raped by the judge who sentenced him. Vowing revenge, he teams up with a pie make and then opens a barbershop in which he slits the throats of his customers (including the judge) and has them baked into pies. The 1979 Stephen Sondheim musical won eight Tony Awards, including best musical. www.SkokieParks.org/devonshire-playhouse.
