Buy A Christmas Tree, Help Scholarship In Memory of Niles North Teacher
Or, 'Seven Fun Things To Do In Skokie This Weekend'
- Buy a Fraser Fir Christmas Tree at Niles North and benefit the Dan Horyn Memorial Scholarship Fund. Dan was a beloved teacher who lost his battle with cancer recently. The Christmas tree sale is Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More info here.
- The Artemis Singers perform two concerts of "A Midwinter Night's Journey" Friday and Saturday evenings at the Ethical Humanist Society, 7574 N. Lincoln, Lincolnwood.
- The Stardust Big Band (is that the perfect name for a big band, or what?) plays Count Basie, bossa nova and even "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." At the Morton Grove Library's After Dark series, 7 p.m. Friday.
- Want to get artisan-crafted gifts for friends for the holidays? Go to the Morton Grove Farmer's Market Winter Market Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion Civic Center, 6140 Dempster. Plan on eating, too, there's good food.
- Pay $14 for a handcrafted bowl filled with a simple meal of soup and bread, and you get to keep the artsy bowl--and the proceeds go to help the hungry around the world. It's called the Empty Bowls fundraiser, at 10:30 a.m. at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. Last year, it raised more than $30,000 to feed the hungry.
- At Day for the Dogs at Evanston Subaru in Skokie on Saturday, there's a pet adoption event from noon to three, and then you can bring in the pet you already have for pet photos with Santa from 2 to 4; they'll give you a hi-res image you can use for your holiday cards (or FB).
- Show off your ugly Christmas sweater for a great cause.Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette hosts a 2.5 K Christmas sweater walk; entry is a non-perishable food item. Benefits the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
