You're 'Invited' To Enjoy Plays and Musicals This Weekend

There's lots to do this weekend, including several nearby plays and musicals, a trip to see migratory birds, free burgers and chili and a wellness fair for Boomers.

  • Love nature? The program "In Search of Sandhill Cranes" is a road trip to see hundreds of these large, impressive migratory birds as they fly to their roosting site at night. Departs 8 a.m. Saturday from Emily Oaks Nature Center, 4650 Brummel, Skokie. Learn more and register.
  • "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" is an 18th century Englishman with a very unconventional way of making meat pies--scandalous, in fact. See the renowned musical of his nefarious adventures Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 8, 9, 16 and 17, when the  Devonshire Playhouse, 4400 Greenwood, Skokie, presents it with an orchestra. The plot: Sweeney Todd, returns to London after serving 15 years in prison on trumped-up charges. He soon finds out that his wife poisoned herself after being raped by the judge who sentenced him. Vowing revenge, he teams up with a pie make and then opens a barbershop in which he slits the throats of his customers (including the judge) and has them baked into pies. The 1979 Stephen Sondheim musical won eight Tony Awards, including best musical. www.SkokieParks.org/devonshire-playhouse.
  • On Sunday, the Morton Grove American Legion hosts an open house at its new club lounge at 6134 W. Dempster, Morton Grove. They'll be serving free hamburgers and chili, as well as cake for the birthday of the Marine Corps. 3 to 8 p.m.; free.
