They get enough that the school will have you arrested if they find out your kid does not go the theRead More correct district they live in. WHY so much? While we sit and learn for months and coloring pictures in 8th grade of Malcom X MLK the people your government does not want you to be like in the first place. We file for grants for after school programs to teach English, math, science. Just look at the school today my kid says for the last quarter they haven't done anything but watch movies and hang around. Is this because of the grade issue? If your school does not meet the standards they want to shut it down. How do you go around that? You stuff as much as you can into them first 3 quarters.4 quarter they start out with A's if you do no work then all got A's on last quarter almost guaranteeing a pass. It's all becoming Government against the teachers...then teachers against the students and parents for money for their school. Actually arresting parents that have their kids going to schools outside their districts. Freedom of choice...Freedom!!...Not in America.

Illinois is one of the top most corrupt states in the USA. I have two more years in this GodRead More forsaken state, then after my daughter finishes school, I'm out of here! My home may be paid off, but I still pay at least $500 a month for property taxes--and I live in the older section with a 55 year old house!!

Shameful! The audacity to want more is as bold as cat manure. They sell the lottery, lease theRead More toll way, to their friends, all the while saying they need more money. This really stinks.

God save the over TAX Citizens of Illinois. I wish i could sell my home, an move out of one of theRead More most corrupt state in the U.S. and Crook County ,but would take a big loss on my home. We have more convicted felons State Legislators than any other state. Ask yourself why ? Look at the legislators who running the state gambling committee! Ask yourself why do Crook County Part -time Commissioners and all part time State Legislators get a ( Full-Time Pension).

TC, Illinois has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, pretty sure we could fillRead More those teaching spots overnight. With the technology we have today we could easily supplement the cost of these state breaking pensions that fraudulently get bumped up in a teacher's final years. Charter schools are doing a better job without union teachers. During Chicago's teacher strike I listened to union teachers that barely spoke English. No complaints about the salaries, just get rid of the pensions.

The system is flawed and failed. Yes, by all mean bring back days when kids could leave their bikesRead More in the front lawn and run in for a drink. Bring back the days when politicians weren't closing parks because the basketball hoops invited crime. Bring back the days when kids could gather without risk of going to jail. Bring back the days when you could trust the cop on the beat. I pity anyone, mine included, who has the task of raising a child in a world of political injustice and internet bullying. This parents today jump on the band wagon and attack yet their precious little ones are without flaws. Life has yet to come full circle. Beware the evil that dwells within.

Jay Jay, I applaud your insight. Corruption on the forefront, vigilante justice, overinflatedRead More property taxes, laws lobbied for by alcoholics persecuting smokers for all wrong doing. Welcome to Illinois folks. Re-evaluate the equity in your home versus the extortion you are paying to corrupt politicians. Short term loss is often worth the long term gain.

Oh and in one year our property taxes more than doubled--and that's not even including what theRead More mayor plans to do with increasing property taxes. This state is run by corrupt politicians and union leaders. Their ineptitude has what has led us to this fiscal nightmare and they continue to look the other way and just expect to have the residents pay even more to solve the problems of their own making..
Grumpy Old Man April 15, 2014 at 01:33 pm
@Southeast Side - Well, if all of the middle class has moved out of Chicago it will be othersRead More (wealthy, poor, working class) who are paying the tax. If your argument is that there still is a middle class in Chicago and that they will pay the tax, say it. As it is your response just sounds like a left wing shill. Other than your last comment, I happen to think your post has a point because I think implicit in your response is that there is still a significant middle class in Chicago (but if taxes keep going up the comment in the main article could be a self fulfilling prophesy - maybe not - there is some controversy over whether millionaires would leave the state if the 3% additional surtax was imposed on earnings above $1 million).
Grumpy Old Man April 15, 2014 at 01:57 pm
Frankly, I am not so sure that Zorn doesn't have a point. The ever escalating property taxes affectRead More all of us and probably in excess of what we would pay in terms of increased property taxes (or rent increases due to them). However, it would require some trade off - like a reduced property tax level than currently in place and a single taxing entity for Chicago - the council to set all taxes in the City including taxes for CPS. I don't have the answer but I wouldn't mind some reduction in services and something done abut the constitutional provision that these pensions can't be touched regardless of how economic downturns affect the ability of the investments in which the funds are deposited to maintain a pension amount at a given level.

@William, You are the reason many folks leave this town. Liberal values, no sense of neighborhoodRead More trust, and pure judgment. So...should I tell my children they were conceived by a "sperm donor" as you think? Believe me, you didn't get me "worked up", only my "sperm donor" can do that. Sorry to disappoint. I won't even acknowledge the rest of your pint-sized egotistical comments. Talk to me when you have a disabled child, are a cancer survivor, and work hard enough to understand the real value of Conservative life. I am leaving this uppity town soon. It's quite sad, truthfully. I talk to many and they want out because of people you. I am leaving Illinois, I won't look back on Geneva as a good place to be even though I've been here 13 years. I only stayed for my "Sperm donor-ed children". You're a ruthless pig. William? William who? Reveal yourself like a real man would. You're a coward just like a terrorist. Saying ruthless things to belittle a woman, you're also an abuser. Seems to me your a bitter old man. May God forgive you, for he knows not what he does.
Momx4inGeneva April 16, 2014 at 03:48 am
@William you need to be "Booted" out of this town, and State. You can take your threatsRead More and abuse with you. You, the old man, married, but hasn't ever been able to shoot a "X" anything. Sorry God hasn't blessed you with a womb to carry your evilness.
Phaedrus Pirsig April 16, 2014 at 09:04 am
Jim, that's fine, I was only mirroring your own comments. Are you also proud that all yourRead More neighbors property taxes are going up? I have neighbors that been on my street for 25-40 years that are being forced out of their homes because the city took away their long term resident discount and shrank their senior citizen discount 85%. All due to union pensions. Are you proud that this is the worst state in the country fiscally because of union debt. Debt procured by union backed politicians. Do you think your neighbors, friends and family that aren't union members are proud of you for the debt they pay? What do you think non-union people say about you behind your back? Jim do you worry that the city or state will go bankrupt and you will get nothing because your union won't compromise? Anyway, thank you for displaying your pride, we all know what comes after it.

I would argue that just about every town has a certain amount of uptight citizens. NapervilleRead More certainly has its share at least. We should not rely on a list to tell us where the best places to live are. Your town is what you make of it. If you are happy in the home and town you live in then that should be enough satisfaction.

I agree to a point Lisa, but external elements certainly has the capabilities of defining a person.Read More Neighbors kids always throwing trash outside of their car, kids walking around with their pants half way down their arse, drug dealing, the occasional child perp that lives down the street, the list goes on. Certain areas are way more conducive and advantageous to raising your family the right way, inside and out.

WI is no bastion of good governance nor is it on a sound economic footing. Have you been to KenoshaRead More lately? Have you seen the issues that are manifest in Milwaukee? Are you aware of the divisions between those who blame their own public workforce [firemen, law enforcement, teachers, etc] for the state's inability to sustain itself in the face of imploding real incomes and the continued decline? The biggest thing going for WI over/in comparison to Illinois is that WI isn't awash with perversely corrupt politicians, haven't declared their major city as a 'sanctuary city' and doesn't have a vast segment of their population sucking 'em dry by being both utterly unemployable and consuming vast resources at the same time. Of course, if you like cheese/dairy products, bowling, drinking to excess on a regular basis and open'g day of deer-season being an official day-off; Wisconsin's may be the place for you.
RB April 6, 2014 at 06:06 pm
The Illinois problem took years to build up and is now manifesting in a big way. Democrats andRead More Republicans are to blame. Someone above blames the electorate and I can't dismiss that. If they begin to tax retiree income (not just public pensions...all pensions) and don't do something about getting a progressive tax rate.....we will have more flight from the State. Without a progressive tax structure, we would actually have higher taxes than California...and that's scary. Prince Von Carhartt is simply pointing out the obvious with no real plan to fix the problem. It will get much worse before it gets better, regardless of who is Governor.
Jan April 6, 2014 at 11:29 pm
We've been had by both sides of the aisle over the years. Guv candidates can campaign all theyRead More want, but no one person is going to fix the mess we're in. They've proven time and again they don't know how to handle money and yet they have the brass kahoonies to raise taxes here and there and everywhere. Anyone who believes there's any such thing as a temporary tax hasn't been paying attention- at all. I think the electorate vents in chat rooms and opinions posts It's almost as if they actually think their elected officials are reading this stuff. How many have actually contacted them? IF we don't tell them what we want, we give them free rein to do whatever THEY want - and that's OUR fault.

To the extent that rationing is the result of the inability of certain groups to afford insurance,Read More or insurance at the level that it will provide them with the care they desire Gary's point is spot on. The rationing is based on the rising cost of medical care and the ability of the insurance industry to contain costs without decreasing the quality of care available to its insureds. That generally means the variety of plans at differing costs, with the greater the coverage provided, the more the cost of the premium. The government currently provides health care to those persons who do not have health care insurance. That health care may not be the same level or quality that a person with a cadillac plan obtains, but health care, including care for life threatening injuries or diseases is provided. The single payer system which some want skewers this result, results in less care available and will result in the most rationed health care program around - it limits choice. There is an argument that if employer provided health insurance had never been introduced the costs of health care would be markedly less than it is. That is probably true. I don't know that the genie can go back in the bottle, that physicians will make house calls, but all of these benefits we appear to get either from the government or our jobs have consequences, some of which are not beneficial. A young person, in good health, is probably better off getting a health care plan which pays only for catastrophic coverage leaving him to pay for ordinary doctor and ER visits. The issue is cost containment without reduction in quality or care. Government decisions concerning medicaid and medicare have resulted in numerous doctors not accepting medicaid patients. Medicare may soon, if not already, may see this happening. That is what happens when the government interferes. You end up harming more than you help, and those you seek or claim to help generally come out worse. The next time Pedro you start on your pathetic little rants about others growing up and thinking about others, you might first take a good look in the mirror.
Vicky Kujawa March 31, 2014 at 06:23 pm
