Should schools close because of below-zero temperatures? | Credit: File Photos

Every one of the reasons given by the 5 people who commented that schools should remain open areRead More absolutely idiocy. Keeping schools open with the weather conditions forecasted for Monday borders on child endangerment. I have been in temperatures at minus 26 degrees. I know how to survive it. If you don't, it is deadly within minutes. If a school bus or car breaks down or a school boiler fails, hypothermia & death is at the doorstop. Most people are not even likely to be able to start their cars. No kid could survive waiting for a bus for more than a couple of minutes. Most people are not prepared if something should go wrong on their way to work. Yes, those commentators supporting opening schools need their heads examined by a psychiatrist. Maybe it would be futile since they would finding their cerebral cortex missing.

I think what Chicago Public Schools do is correct. Leave the schools open and let the parents makeRead More the decision if they send there child to school. The main reason that CPS schools are open is that is the only place the children have to go for a meal and to stay warm. The last time the schools were actually closed (I believe it was the mid-90s) and there was a changing of the guard at Central Office right after that.
