Danny Pudi of 'Community' Speaking At Notre Dame Graduation

The comic TV actor, who graduated from Notre Dame in 1997, will be the commencement speaker at graduation Saturday.

Danny Pudi may have graduated from Niles' Notre Dame College Prep in 1997, but he's still attending Greendale Community College in NBC's comedy series Community. He plays Abed, one of a group of tight-knit friends who study together, in the well-written comedy series about life at a fictional community college. On Saturday, Pudi will take a break from life in Los Angeles, where he lives, to speak to Notre Dame's Class of 2013 at their commencement. Will he gossip about celebrities he's met in the world of TV glitterati? Tell tales of the funny men and women at Second City, where he studied? Or just reminisce about the balmy weather during Chicago winters while a student at ND?  As they say, stay tuned.  Like Patch on Facebook Notre Dame …

Bring a Lake Bluff Brew to Your Memorial Day BBQ

A small batch brewery on the North Shore has some options for those of you looking to bring a delicious, local beer to your Memorial Day celebration.

Heading to a Memorial Day barbecue this weekend and looking to bring something more creative than buns or brats? Try some really tasty beer. After finishing an interview last week at Inovasi, I stumbled into Lake Bluff Brewery for the first time. Patch has written about these guys before, but I actually didn't know the place existed until reading about it as the final destination of an awesome day-long bike ride in the Chicago Reader.  It was around 5 p.m. on Friday when I walked in and the place was packed, but not too busy that the friendly bartender couldn't find time to let me sample a few beers. I tried the Derailleur first, since, for better or for worse, IPAs are typically my starting point. Then, I tried the Skull and Bones Double …

Higher Speed Limit Bill Heads to Gov's Desk

70 mph on rural interstates not a done deal yet, as bill has its opponents.

A bill to increase the maximum speed limit in Illinois could hit Gov. Pat Quinn’s desk for his signature soon. Whether Quinn will sign it remains to be seen. The bill, introduced by Republican State. Sen. Jim Oberweis, would raise the speed limit on rural Illinois highways to 70 mph. The bill, which has passed both chambers of the state legislature, has been met with opposition due to safety concerns by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, according to the Chicago Tribune. “The progression of this legislation is a good example of what can be accomplished when lawmakers work together in a bipartisan manner for the good of our state,” Oberweis said. “It was sponsored…

Raising speeding to misdemeanor status is stupid, especially given the fact that the Tri-State posted limit is 55 mph and the free flow rate of traffic is 80 mph. Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.   more ›

Illinois Senate OKs Help for Human Trafficking Victims

State senators joined the House in passing a bill that would reimburse human trafficking victims for the removal of tattoos, or 'brands,' which offenders put on them to show 'ownership.'

Victims of human trafficking who have been "branded" with tattoos by those enslaving them got support from the Illinois Senate Wednesday, according to Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office. State senators voted 58-0 to allow victims to be reimbursed out of the Illinois Crime Victims Compensation Fund for the removal of the tattoos. The Illinois House had earlier unanimously passed the measure, and it now goes to the governor. Criminal offenders who engage in human trafficking subject their victims to horrific abuse, Madigan's office said in a statement. They frequently tattoo victims to show "ownership" of them. “Human trafficking victims are subjected to horrific physical and psychological abuse,” said Madigan, whose office helped …
