Monday Blotter: Man Attacked at Gas Station

Bomb threat Police responded to a bomb threat at Illinois Human Services Facility, 8020 St. Louis Ave., on May 14. Upon reaching the building, however, police were unable to locate any bomb or legitimate threat, the report said. Battery Three males attacked a Skokie man during an altercation at Marathon gas station, 8001 Skokie Blvd., on May 10. According to the report, the victim saw an acquaintance of his and the two reached out to shake hands. However, one of the alleged suspects quickly pulled away his hand and struck the victim in the nose. The attacker's friends allegedly joined the attack, the report said, and would later flee the scene. When police interviewed the victim, he declined to cooperate with officers, the report said. …

Nato Weekend is Here and Police Are Ready

"There's concern throughout the suburbs - whether it's norther, western or southern - that something could expand out of Chicago." - Police chief on Nato 2012 in Chicago. The summit begins this weekend, May 20 - 21.

North suburban police departments, including are training to back up Chicago police for the NATO summit May 20-21 – and to handle any incidents that spill out beyond the city limits. Since the Department of Homeland Security issued an alert for potential terrorismon the May 1, the anniversary of the bin Laden killing. Regarding the NATO summit, “There’s concern throughout the suburbs – whether it’s northern, western or southern – that something could expand out of Chicago,” said Morton Grove Police Chief Mark Erickson. “For the most part, it’s just a concern. A look at unusual crimes in our Patch region this week.

Local police departments provided the following reports. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. Johnny Appleseed's evil twin A Winnetka resident on Sheridan Road reported that someone cut the electrical wires for an in-ground sprinkler system and sprayed an unknown chemical on pine trees. The trees died. Casino royale pain in the $#! An Aurora man was charged with two counts of battery after an altercation with family members at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines. Burglary Attempt Leads to Police Foot Chase

An alleged burglary attempt involving three individuals resulted in a brief foot chase that landed officers in School District 68's administrative building, resulting in a "soft lock down" for staff.

A trio of alleged burglars were caught shortly after attempting to break into a Skokie home on Monday. One of the suspects was captured at School District 68's administrative building, 9440 Kenton Ave., resulting in a "soft lockdown" for the building, police said. Officers initially responded to a residential burglary in the 9400 block of Lemington Avenue on May 14 around 12 p.m. According to police, three men were attempting to break into a home through an attached garage. While unsuccessful, a nearby resident witnessed the crime and contacted authorities shortly after the group fled. The witness's description matched that of a similar incident that took place in Morton Grove a few days earlier. Police would soon locate two of the alleged…

Stolen spare A truck parked in the 4800 block of Grove Street had its spare tire stolen on May 13. The estimated value of the tire and rim was around $500, the report said. Storage units burglarized About a dozen storage locker units at Public Storage, 8220 Skokie Blvd., were reported burglarized on May 14. According to the report, the locks on the units were cut using a lock cutter. Among the items taken were bicycles, DVDs, purses and other belongings. Theft from auto A car parked at Sports Park, 3459 Oakton St., was reported burglarized on May 14. According to the report, an Apple iPad valued at $500 was stolen from a vehicle. Northern Illinois Police K9 Memorial members get closer to making their dream of a memorial a reality. Also, meet Dino, Skokie's police watch dog.

Tony Fanella always has loved dogs. The Lake County sheriff’s deputy and his sister, Traci Sikorski, grew up with German shepherds in their family. So when the opportunity arose for Fanella to apply for a police K9 partner, he jumped at the chance. Fanella was paired with Sinbad, a smart, loyal German shepherd. They worked together for three years. “These dogs become your best friend,” Fanella said. “You spend more time with them than your family.” Then, in June 2004, Fanella was training with Sinbad when the K9 unexpectedly suffered heat stroke and lost his life. “It was really hard on the whole family,” Sikorski said. “They work with these dogs, they’re home with them. Identity theft A woman came in the Skokie police station to report an identity theft on May 1. According to the report, a person in Iowa rented a car using her credit card information and never returned the vehicle, the report said. Garage burglary A garage in the 5200 block of Davis Street was reported burglarized on May 3. According to the report, brute force was used to gain entry. The culprit(s) then went on to take a snow blower, lawnmower, various tools and a bicycle, among other items. The combined value of said items exceeded $2,000, the report said. I'm noticing there's not a big emphasis on the petty thefts taking place around town. People should know that there are criminals breaking car windows to steal GPS devices. As I recently became a victim, I'm realizing the need to let others know. It's a costly theft for such a small financial gain. Hide your GPS units people.   more ›

Stolen bike A bike stored inside a garage in the 8800 block of Ewing Avenue was reported stolen on May 6. DUI Jason Chueng, 31, of Gurnee, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on April 22. According to the report, Chueng was stopped in the 4500 block of Dempster Street for a traffic violation. He allegedly had a blood alcohol content level of .118, the report said.
