Glenbrook South, New Trier, Deerfield, Highland Park, Niles West, Maine West, Maine South, Notre Dame, Niles North and Loyola athletes will join Wildkits at State Meet.
Taking home the team trophy for the sixth straight year, the Evanston High School boys track team won the Niles West Sectional Thursday in Skokie sending five individuals and three relay teams to the State Meet May 24 and 25 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston The Wildkits compiled 85 points. Glenbrook South took home second place with 72 followed by Prospect in third with 70 and New Trier fourth with 58. Niles West accumulated 47 for fifth with Deerfield sixth, Main South seventh, Niles North eighth, Highland Park ninth place, Notre Dame of Niles tenth, Maine West 11th , Loyola Academy 12th, Maine East 13th\, Glenbrook North 14th and Von Steuben 15th. Students at Walker School panned for fool's gold, churned butter, square-danced and dressed in period attire for the annual "Pioneer Day" at Walker Elementary School.
Students at Walker Elementary School took a trip back in time to the days of wagon trains and fool's gold during the school's annual "Pioneer Day." They churned butter, played with toys from the mid-1800s, made bread dough, shaved with brushes and do-si-doed in the school gymnasium. The school has held Pioneer Day for the past 19 years as a way of bringing the past to life. Third-graders spent several days learning how to square dance, learning vocabulary like "square your set" and "bow to your partner." The toughest part was getting boys and girls to hold hands, said physical education teacher Pamela Akins-Schanette. "It was not as difficult as it has been in some other instances," she said.

The cost of medical insurance for Evanston-Skokie School District 65 employees is going down by three percent next year.
Evanston-Skokie School District 65 is expected to see “almost a million dollars” in cost savings because the cost of medical insurance for district employees is going down by three percent next year, according to Chief Financial Officer Mary Brown, Evanston Now reported. The district also expects to end the year close to its budgeted operating surplus of $400,000. The school board is expected to review a draft budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year in August, with final approval slated for September, Evanston Now reported. Related Coverage

Skokie-Morton Grove District 69 is scheduled to finalize the appointment of the new principal of Madison School at its May 21 meeting. Christopher Basten, 51, will replace Principal Chelsey Maxwell, who is leaving at the end of June, Morton Grove Champion reported. Basten has served as assistant principal at Kimball Hill Elementary School in Community Consolidated School District 15 and before that he taught at Hubbard Woods Elementary School in Winnetka. The Niles Township High School District 219 student was recently featured on Chicago Tonight.
Niles North High School junior Allegra Rosenberg was recently featured on Chicago Tonight as part of the program's look at how social media is changing the model for music distribution, and how teens with unusual passions like Rosenberg are making their mark. Rosenberg is a YouTube sensation, writing and performing songs about the things that appeal to her. Her hit “Say Hello,” about an episode of Doctor Who that was penned by Neil Gaiman, a best-selling novelist, prompted Gaiman to tweet, “took me 3 years of scribbling and rewrites to make 45 minutes of Dr. Who, summed up in 2:29 by a smart girl with a ukulele.”

The Illinois High School Association approved new safety rules Wednesday to limit tackling in youth football practice in an effort to reduce head injuries, reported the Daily Herald. In March, a controversial bill sponsored by State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) proposing to limit the number of days players could have full contact hitting practice (twice a week) failed in the House committee. The new IHSA policy calls for coaches to gradually increase the time players can participate in preseason practice, along with the number of protective pads they can wear. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield) made their first joint public appearance in Illinois since Kirk returned to full time duty in the Senate in January at a Great Lakes charter school they helped create which is now being hurt by the Sequester. Durbin, Kirk and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) met with students at the Learn Public Charter School, a North Chicago public school on the Great Lakes Naval Base, to see the new institution and listen to the students. “This is our first public appearance in Illinois since Sen. An East Prairie Middle School instructor was recently awarded Barnes & Noble’s “My Favorite Teacher Award.”
East Prairie Middle School teacher Timothy Berlinghof won Barnes & Noble’s “My Favorite Teacher” contest recently. Berlinghof won after his student Mary Jo Hernandez wrote an essay that described how her instructor influenced her education in a positive way. Area students submitted more than 50 entries. Entries were judged on the compelling nature of the teacher’s qualities, the sincerity of the student’s appreciation and the quality of expression and writing. Berlinghof will be recognized at an event at the Skokie (Village Crossing) Barnes & Noble on May 8 where he will receive a special award acknowledging his achievement.
