Assault Weapons and the Myths Perpetuated by Uninformed

What is the difference between a semiautomatic and automatic weapon? Is the AR-15 more deadly than a revolver?

I've been hearing a lot about how we need to ban assault weapons, but I'm finding that the same misinformation that was floated back in 1994 is being used once against to ramp up hysteria around semi-automatic rifles. So, the following is an explanation of terms and general discussion of the folly of so-called "assault weapon" bans.  Assault Weapons: What is an assault weapon? Well, the truthful answer is that there is no such thing as an assault weapon. The term was fabricated by gun control groups and the media to describe semi-automatic rifles that had 2 or more cosmetic features such as pistol grips and telescoping stocks - such as civilian versions of the AR-15 and AK47. The term was created to intentionally cause confusion among the …

It;s easier to ignore the elephants in the room than face reality: >>Politics and Reality: The NRA was lambasted for saying that, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." Well it's true. With the exception of the Arizona shooter, every other mass shooter has been stopped by either armed law enforcement or an armed concealed carry permit holder. if you don't like …   more ›

Tonight: Skate Park Vote, Parents To Speak Out Against Halloween Ban

Skokie-Morton Grove School District 69 will be hosting an important meeting tonight at Madison Elementary. The school board is expected to vote on a proposed skate park and many parents are gearing up to speak out against the recent Halloween ban at D69.

It just might be the biggest board meeting in Skokie-Morton Grove School District 69 history. On the agenda are two hot-button issues: The recent Halloween ban that passed without community input and the vote on a proposed skate park to be built on Lincoln Junior High property. For the skate park, board members will be voting tonight on whether or not it should be built at the proposed location, Lincoln Junior High. There are a variety of mixed feelings about the skate park. Many say it will generate revenue to nearby businesses and deter skaters from practicing tricks on public property. On the other hand, there are those that think it will increase crime. And finally, some are for the skate park, but simply do not want it built on …

Halloween Canceled: District 69 Bans Costumes, Celebration

Citing religious reasons as well as economic and social, there will be no Halloween activities for Skokie School District 69 students moving forward.

SKOKIE – District 69 won’t be providing any ‘treats’ to their students for Halloween moving forward. The school district has decided to ban the holiday. “There will be no costumes, no candy bags, no parties,” said District 69 Superintendent Quintin Shepherd. Shepherd said his staff has discussed the idea of banning Halloween for about three years. He added that he spoke to families who were against the holiday during that process. However, Shepherd noted he did not seek input from the community as a whole, adding that it would not have achieved anything in the end. “Frankly, I did not want to waste their [the community's] time,” Shepherd said. “We knew what their response would be. We know they would feel strongly [about banning Halloween …

I went to CPS and my brother and daughter to Skokie schools. We never dressed up on Halloween, but had trick or treat after school. It's not necessary. We have gobs of kids come by after school into the evening. As far as creativity, growing up there was always a box of dress ups in the playroom, and silly makeup too for the kids. Creativity was not limited to Halloween. Let the teachers teach …   more ›
