A 73-year-old man was arrested outside a motel in North Chicago after he robbed a bank on Sunday. The suspect told a teller that he had "six months to live."
After a Niles bank was robbed Saturday, FBI agents and Niles Police charged Walter Unbehaun, 73, of Rock Hill, S.C., the very next day. Unbehaun was charged with one count of bank robbery, a felony, in a criminal complaint filed Monday with the U.S. District Court. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison. According to an FBI statement, the complaint said Unbehaun drove to the area of BMO Harris Bank, 7707 W. Dempster St. in neighboring Niles on Saturday morning. He then entered the bank, approached a teller and presented a note announcing a robbery. A Chicago man was indicted for two counts of aggravated bank robbery last week in connection with two armed "take-over" robberies in Winnetka and Skokie in June. Carlos Stillwell, 42, has been in custody since shortly after the robberies on an unrelated charge. Police charged Stillwell in connection to the Winnetka robbery in February. Following an investigation and forensic analysis by the Northeastern Illinois Regional Crime Laboratory in Vernon Hills, Stillwell was also connected to the Skokie robbery. The Winnetka and Skokie police departments worked with the FBI in the investigation, said Patrick Kreis, interim chief of Winnetka police. Pregnant manager was so nervous she 'punched the alarm three times.'
Edens Bank, 5256 Dempster St., was robbed Wednesday. It marked the second bank robbery in Skokie in less than a month. According to police, the suspect entered the bank about 4 p.m. and originally asked a teller for some information on opening an account. He then left the bank, returned one minute later and approached the bank manager quietly. Police said the robber told the manager "to relax" as he placed "something into her side with his hand." The manager told the suspect that she was "too nervous to open the bank vault," which prompted a reply of "I know you're pregnant so I won't hurt you," according to the police report.
