The nominees for Athlete of the Week: Glenbrook North's Jim McPike, Niles West's Dashae Shumate, Maine West's Brittany Collins, New Trier's Sam Stoddart and Maine South's Michael Zadlo.
More than 71,000 votes were cast in last week's contest and Niles West's Ryan Miller was voted Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 23 - Jan. 29: Jim McPike, senior, wrestling, Glenbrook North – McPike took the conference championship in the 170-pound division. The senior from Glenbrook North pinned New Trier’s Luke Hidder in the second period of the conference finals to claim the championship. The win moved McPike to 19-5 on the year. Dashae Shumate, sophomore, girls basketball, Niles West – Shumate made the game-winning layup for Niles West against Maine South last week. Her two points as time expired gave the Wolves a 42-41 win. Shumate had 12 points in the victory and helped Niles West move into first …

More than 300 votes were cast last week and Glenbrook South's Molly McDonagh claimed the title of Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 16 - Jan. 22: Zach Cole, senior, boys bowling, Deerfield – Cole took third place at the sectional championships with a 1332 in his six-game series. The senior led Deerfield to a third-place team finish and qualified as an individual for the state championship. More than 15,000 votes were counted last week and Deerfield's Alex Sacks was proclaimed this week's Athlete of the Week. Sacks scored a game-high 19 points in the Warriors’ 67-52 non-conference victory over Wheeling. The senior had four points in the fourth quarter to lead Deerfield in a late-game comeback. The Deerfield basketball star received more than 7,500 votes, or about 48 percent. Honorable Mention: Mychael Henley, senior, basketball guard, Niles North – Henley scored 23 points and collected five rebounds in the Vikings’ 67-52 win over Uplift last week. More than 1,500 votes were cast in last week's contest and Maine South's Nina Duric was proclaimed the winner. Duric led the Hawks’ balanced scoring attack with 14 points and nine rebounds in Maine South’s 55-43 win over Champaign Centennial to claim the State Farm Holiday Classic title. This marks the first time Maine South has won the championship in school history. The Maine South basketball star received more than 700 votes, or about 47 percent. Honorable Mention: Malachi Nix, junior, basketball guard, Niles North – Nix had 13 points in the first quarter and 23 for the game in Niles North’s 62-48 win over Vernon Hills in the Wheeling Hardwood Classic consolation game. Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. Niles West, Loyola and Glenbrook North made waves at early holiday tournaments, but a number of girls teams struggled. All of the area’s boys teams were off, resting and preparing for a full slate of games between Christmas and New Years. New Trier and Glenbrook North will go to the always-tough Proviso West tournament while Glenbrook South and Highland Park will try out the first annual Hinsdale South tournament. In another big turnout, see who took home this week's honor as Athlete of the Week!
More than 12,000 votes were cast in last week's contest for Athlete of the Week and Loyola's Michelle Ricolcol came out the winner. Ricolcol scored 14 points – all in the second half – to lead the Ramblers to a 47-40 win over St. Ignatius on Dec. 16. That brought Loyola Academy's record to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference. Ricolcol garnered more than 9,000 votes or 74 percent of all ballots cast. The rest of last week's nominees were: Jacqui Grant, junior, girls basketball, Maine South – Grant had 17 points and 10 rebounds against CSL South-leading Glenbrook South in a 45-39 victory last week. Almost 600 votes were cast and in the end Deerfield's Michael Alfieri claimed this week’s Athlete of the Week title. Alfieri was one of the main reasons Deerfield handed CSL North rival Glenbrook North its first loss of the season. The standout sophomore scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assist in the Warriors’ 48-42 victory. Alfieri captured 264 votes, or 44 percent. The contest literally came down to the wire, with Alfieri and Glenbrook North's Mark Johnson tied with the same amount of votes just hours before Sunday's voting deadline (midnight). Niles West remained at No. 3 in this week's power rankings.
Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. All the talk at the start of the girls season was about the three-team race for the CSL South title between Niles West, Maine South and New Trier. Yet in mid-December, the last remaining undefeated team is Glenbrook South. New Trier still seems to be the class of the CSL on the boys side, especially after Glenbrook North fell to Deerfield last week. Maine South jumped up to No. 2 and is our biggest riser this week. Niles West's girls basketball team lost its first game of the season and both gymnastics teams are starting off their season.
Just like last year, Niles West swept Niles North in the Crosstown Classic with both the boys and girls basketball teams recording victories. In the boys game, Niles West edged the Vikings 60-57 at home thanks to a 13-5 run late in the fourth quarter. Ahmad Gibson had 15 points to lead Niles West while Malachi Nix had a game-high 25 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter. On the girls side things were a little less dramatic. Jewell Loyd scored 39 points and Niles West outpaced the Vikings 49-38. Niles West came back from a nine-point deficit at halftime as Loyd put up 26 points in the second half.
