Some cats are mooches for attention. Other cats, like C.A.R.E. cat Angie, prefer to call the shots. Angie, a striking, "Rubenesque" tortie/calico mix, has been living at C.A.R.E. for more than a year now. She doesn't seem to be a fan of other cats, but she appears to be okay with dogs who are polite to her. But Angie loves people. If you sit down, Angie will make a beeline for your lap and some cuddles. That said, Angie is a cat who expects respect. She can be quite opinionated and talkative, as C.A.R.E. volunteers have noted. If you do something that she doesn't appreciate (like trying to pet her tummy) she'll let you know she doesn't like it. Angie shines when it comes to supervising. She's in her element when hanging out in the C.A.R.E…

Nacho, a lively young Border Collie mix, combines calm and sweetness with a high-energy personality. Nacho tends to express himself through barking--he is a Dog Of Opinions and not afraid to share them, which is why he needs to be in a single-family house rather than a condo or apartment. Nacho is also an agile pup who loves playing with toys, especially when someone's around to toss balls for him. Inquisitive yet naive, Nacho needs help maturing, but has great promise thanks to his willing spirit. Nacho seeks a patient person or family with both a sense of humor and willingness to work on his higher education. Nacho's Stats: C.A.R.E. to Meet Nacho? Please come to C.A.R.E., 2310 Oakton St., Evanston, to meet Nacho in person and speak with…

Each week, we feature pets available for adoption from C.A.R.E. at Evanston's Animal Shelter. This week's post includes a gorgeous brindle-colored boxer mix named Roxie.

Roxie, a beautiful brindle-colored boxer mix (with a touch, some CARE volunteers think, of greyhound as well), has had a rough time of it recently. Her family had to give her up because their life got too busy. But they taught her how to love, right along with excellent manners, basic training and of course, housebreaking. Roxie loves everyone she meets and greets people with a happy wagging tail. She has a gentle heart and approaches life with a light touch and polite manners. That said, life in the shelter is hard on her since she's such a social dog who would like nothing better than to hang around with people. Roxie already knows a lot of basic obedience. CARE volunteers are trying to keep her sharp by helping Roxie practice her …

Editor's note: The following is an announcement from C.A.R.E. volunteer Janice Cha. C.A.R.E.'s Summer Dog Wash is just around the corner. Dog scrubbers and dryers--all C.A.R.E. volunteers--will muster from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this coming Saturday, June 23, to wash dogs on shelter grounds at 2310 Oakton in Evanston. For the modest price of $10 (regardless of size), you will be able to bring home a sparkly clean hound. An additional $10 will get their nails trimmed, too. Such a deal! Making her C.A.R.E. Dog Wash debut will be Heidi Danos, an Evanston entrepreneur who recently launched a handmade soap business called Dirty Knees Soap Co. Heidi's most recent addition to her line of handmade soaps is Dirty Paws, a soap for... you guessed it, dogs…

Meet Georgia: One of C.A.R.E.'s smartest dogs, Georgia, a compact shepherd/terrier mix, thrives on learning new things. This whiz-kid of a dog has a happy attitude about learning and exploring life. She's an exuberant girl who loves to play. She's equally good at chilling out with a chew toy and her people. And she's already demonstrated to C.A.R.E. volunteers how she can learn tricks in a flash. In fact, check out Georgia's starring role in a YouTube clip: See Georgia in the "Are You Smarter Than a Shelter Dog?" video! You can adopt this smarty-pants pooch! Sure, there are times Georgia can be sensitive and unsure--but that goes for most good dogs. Her ideal parent will be one who's patient and gives her a chance to figure things out. …

C.A.R.E. dog Rose is a chestnut-red terrier mix, who volunteers describe as "a sweet, curious girl with an expressive face." Rose can be shy and gentle during quiet time, or rambunctious when play time arrives. Rose is so eager to please that she learns quickly. She's already a good way through the Polite Dog lexicon--she knows how to walk on a leash, give paw, sit, lie down and more. Rose's 'Dream Family' would have people (kids should be 12 and over) who can be sensitive to her shy side but also appreciate her exuberant side. The right dog companion could be great--but since she loves to chase cats, no felines or other small animals, please. With a little guidance and a lot of love, Rose will be an affectionate and steadfast companion…

It’s time you bring out your pooch for a good cause! On Saturday, May 12 at 9 a.m., join animal lovers throughout Chicagoland for the 17th annual Strut for Strays, hosted by C.A.R.E. The event is a volunteer-run community animal rescue effort. Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl will also be present. You do not need a dog to attend. This annual fundraiser brings the C.A.R.E. community and their dogs together for a three-mile morning walk. The Strut course starts at Ladd Arboretum on McCormick Boulevard, and meanders along the beautiful Sculpture Park to Dempster Street and then back to the Arboretum. In addition to the walk, participants can look forward to the Doggie Carnival, hot coffee, snacks and the chance to interact with dogs of all …

The Skokie Police Explorers car wash took place Aug. 6 at the old police station near Laramie and Lincoln avenues. The Explorers washed more than 20 vehicles and raised more than $200 for the Community Animal Rescue Effort (CARE), an animal shelter in nearby Evanston. "We had many people stop by with their pets," said officer Tammy Jacobsen, an organizer of the event. "We even [had] some people stop by to just drop off a donation." Jacobson noted the students decided to hold the event after reading a Patch story on animal shelter conditions. The story went viral, appearing on both the Huffington Post and AOL websites.
