The police have already purchased two additional radar display panels per the budget meeting last night. It also looks as if the $300,000 POLICE FUN-BUS will be acquired as well...though Chief Scarpelli was loathe to speculate exactly how many days of the year it might be "deployed" and how many officers would staff it. But we can count on it at the Forth of July festivities, Festival of Cultures…   more ›

In Light of Tragic Death, Does Niles North Need a Traffic Signal?

In light of the tragic death of Carter Vo and Leon Goldberg, Skokie Patch wants to ask its readers: Would a traffic signal prevented either death?

Skokie saw two tragic traffic related fatalities about five months apart from each other. On May 21, 9-year-old Carter Vo was killed as he stood by his bicycle at the corner of St. Louis Avenue and Main Street. Meanwhile, Hanin Goma, 23, from Skokie, caused a chain three-car accident that ultimately led to Vo’s death. It was later revealed that Goma had marijuana and amphetamines in her system during the accident. The accident happened just a few blocks from Middleton Elementary School. Many parents became concerned, and reached out to village officials about building a traffic signal near Main Street and Central Avenue. Trustees and village officials listened, and hired Gewalt Hamilton (GH) to conduct a survey on whether a traffic signal …

I believe speed bumps or noisy grooves like on highways would be more helpful. Some of these accidents involved drugs, alcohol, mental illness or other distractions, so a traffic light may not have been helpful.   more ›

Opinion: Main Street Speed Reduction Makes No Sense

After the tragic death of 9-year-old Carter Vo, some Skokie residents expressed concern about the speed limit on Main Street near Middleton Elementary School.

Editor's note: The following is an opinion and does not reflect Skokie Patch's view on said issue. If you'd like to provide a counter to this piece, please email me at georges@patch.com.  I oppose the speed limit reduction on Main Street. The proposed ordinance was slated for a second reading and included as part of the consent agenda at the Village of Skokie Board of Trustees meeting on Oct. 1.   I had hoped the Village Trustees would vote in the best interests of the community at large and not simply follow the Public Safety Task Force’s recommendations, especially since none of the Skokie Staff representatives on that committee or the consultant supported the speed limit reduction at the Aug. 8, meeting.  In addition, there were several…

Skokie's most recent Village Board meeting touched on two big changes for motorists and pet owners. The board unanimously approved a revised version of its vicious animal ordinance. The following are among the more notably changes: New traffic light to be built in light of 9-year-olds death - Following the tragic accident that killed 9-year-old Carter Vo, the village approved the construction of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Main Street and Central Park, or just off of Middleton Elementary School, the Skokie Review reports. The construction of the new traffic signal will cost the village about $250,000 and will take at least six months to install. Police already direct traffic outside Middleton during the morning and …

Police Chief, Village Discuss Crime at Skokie Voice Forum

Crime and traffic safety were the big issues discussed at Skokie Voice's open forum last week. According to an unscientific survey released by the group, almost half of the participants said Skokie is less safe than it was 3-5 years ago.

Many Skokie citizens have been alarmed by two very high profile crimes in recent weeks. When shots are fired near a train station or a 9-year-old is killed, tensions are inevitably going to rise. Such emotion served as the backdrop of a meeting on public safety last week. Approximately 150 people attended an open forum hosted by upstart community group Skokie Voice to get an overview on security in the village. Village Manager Al Rigoni, Police Chief Anthony Scarpelli and Trustee Randy Roberts all fielded questions. Not only were the aforementioned incidents on attendee’s minds, an unscientific survey of 293 people generated by Skokie Voice indicated that 47.7 percent of respondents believe the village is less safe than it was 3-5 years …
