Republican Senator is 50th to Back Same Sex Marriage

Sen. Mark Kirk expressed his support of same-marriage in a statement on his personal blog Tuesday.

Senator Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park), is now the second Republican senator to announce his support of same-sex marriage, reports the Huffington Post. On his blog, Kirk wrote: When I climbed the Capitol steps in January, I promised myself that I would return to the Senate with an open mind and greater respect for others. Same-sex couples should have the right to civil marriage. Our time on this Earth is limited, I know that better than most. Life comes down to who you love and who loves you back-- government has no place in the middle. Kirk is the 50th senator to back gay marriage and only the second Republican senator to express his support after Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who changed his position after his son revealed he was gay, according to…

Cardinal George: Same-Sex Marriage Is 'Against The Common Good'

Cardinal Francis George releases a strongly worded letter as the State Legislature moves closer to a vote on gay marriage this January.

As gay marriage moves closer to a vote in the Illinois General Assembly, Cardinal Francis George has released a letter attacking the notion of same- sex marriage itself and urging Catholics to voice their objections.  A full floor vote was delayed today, though an Illinois Senate Executive Committee did approve it, according to the Huffington Post. Despite the delay, proponents say the bill could still ultimately be approved. Illinois would become the 10th state in the country to allow same-sex marriages. In his letter, George argued that because same-sex marriages cannot be consummated and are not undertaken for the purpose of conceiving children that government, "has no power to create something that nature itself tells us is impossible…

Governor Makes Gay Civil Unions Legal

Skokie couple welcomes Quinn's signing of legislation, plans ceremony to knot relationship.

Updated at 7:07 p.m. In what is seen as a victory for the gay rights movement, Gov. Pat Quinn signed a landmark legislation that recognizes same-sex unions in Illinois. Quinn inked  in the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act  at 4 p.m. Monday before a crowd at the Chicago Cultural Center. The enthusiasm has stretched from the North Shore and beyond. But for Philippine natives Francis Britanico and Robert Montecalma, the bill's signing means they no longer will have to worry about issues such as medical decisions and insurance benefits. The two nurses have been together for four years and reside in Skokie. "I'm glad," Montecalma said, "Finally in Illinois, they recognize gay couples." Britanico said compared to a …

State Senate Passes Historic Civil Union Bill

Supporters await governor's signature for right to become law in Illinois.

The Illinois Senate took a historical vote Wednesday afternoon in passing legislation to recognize civil unions among gay and lesbian couples. With Gov. Pat Quinn already on board, it's just a matter of time before he makes it official by signing the bill. The civil union legislation passed on a 32-24-1 vote. Under the bill, heterosexual couples also would be able to enter into civil unions. The measure does not permit same-sex marriages, and same-sex couples do not receive federal benefits anywhere in the U.S. Cook County Clerk David Orr said he was very pleased that Illinois finally took this "crucial step" toward equality. "While religions function under their own rules, government cannot and should not discriminate against any group of…
