Skokie Firefighters Respond to Blaze at Church and Crawford

More than a dozen firefighters were on scene as they put out a two story fire near the intersection of Church Street and Crawford Avenue on Wednesday around 4:45 p.m.

Johnson Shino walked into Anuyu Hair Studio, 4015 Church St., expecting to get a haircut. Instead, he saw a lot of smoke and a whole lot of firefighters. "There was no 'boom,'" Shino said making a gesture with his hands. "Only smoke. It was very quiet" At about 4:45 p.m., Wednesday, smoke from a first floor business caused an entire building to be shutdown and evacuated. Windows of a second floor apartment unit were busted out and the smell of smoke was faint in the air. An office next to the hair salon showcased wet carpet from the water used to put out the blaze above. There were at least four firetrucks on scene.  A Skokie Fire Department official said there were no serious injuries. He also added that no one was transported to the …

Walgreens Superstore Should Be Complete By End of Month

Walgreens' flagship store should be complete by the end of October, according to one construction manager familiar with the project. While some residents are excited about the new business, they also have their concerns, primarily with traffic.

Construction for the new Walgreens superstore near the intersection of Dempster Street and Crawford Avenue should be complete by the end of the month, according to a construction manager from DeJames Builders, who are working on the project. Construction first began in March, and now the building is all but complete. The key differences between the two is that the new Walgreens will sell groceries, be much bigger and offer a drive-thru pharmacy window. Some residents have bitter-sweet thoughts about the new store, however. "I think it is going …

I do not like this decision for Skokie to approve a huge Walgreens at the prior Tap location. I am very familiar with this area. In fact my next door neighbor use to bartend (never drank) at this location some 40 years ago. This is not Dempster like the other resident stated and will add congestion to a quiet residential area. This has been my drive through when previously taking my daughter to …   more ›

Car Catches Fire Off Crawford Avenue

A nearby Skokie resident was able to alert authorities and the homeowner before things escalated.

In an ironic turn of events, a man repairing his friend's car in the early hours of Sunday morning saw a vehicle with a bigger set of problems across the street -- it was on fire. More than four fire trucks and at least two ambulances responded to a fire in the 4000 block of Kirk Avenue on Sunday around 12:30 a.m. The thick smoke emitting from the burning vehicle could be smelled from more than two blocks away. Efrain Salgado was fixing his friend's car when he noticed massive flames and smoke emitting from a parked vehicle across the street. The 25-year-old ran past Crawford Avenue and began knocking on the homeowner's door to notify him about the hot mess that was in his driveway. "He looked surprised when he saw his car on fire," …
