Burning Cigarette Leads to Woman’s 61st Arrest

The alleged suspect had various drugs in her possession as well as an outstanding warrant for her arrest.

And yet another reason to quit smoking: A woman stopped for throwing out a burning cigarette from her vehicle was arrested for the 61st time on Nov. 26. Cynthia M. Kopp, 39, of the 4600 block of Kenton Avenue, was charged with a variety of charges, including possession of an unlawful drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and depositing injurious material (the lit cigarette) on a roadway. Police stopped Kopp after they witnessed her throw a cigarette out the window of her vehicle while she waited on a red light at the intersection of Dempster Street and Skokie Boulevard around 5 p.m. During the stop, police ran a background check on Kopp and realized she had an extensive criminal history, including 60 arrests, 24 of which were for …

Tuesday Blotter: Harassing Calls, Stolen Car Recovered

Stolen vehicle recovered A man who parked his vehicle at the Aldi supermarket on Oakton Street reported it stolen to Skokie police on Jan. 21. The man said he was unsure if the keys were left in the vehicle. Police called the towing company in charge of the Aldi’s parking lot to discover it did not tow the car. The next day, the Chicago Police Department informed Skokie officials that the stolen car was found near 63rd Street and Normal Avenue. Robert Bray, 20, of the 5000 block of Hermitage Avenue, was charged with stealing the car. Cell phone stolen An Everest College student reported his Windows 7 smartphone was stolen Jan. 21 around 8 p.m. According to the report, the student had his phone on a table and later discovered it missing. …

Taxi driver assaulted  Police are looking for a man who assaulted a taxi driver Friday around 5 p.m. According to the report, the suspect was picked up outside of the Doubletree Hotel at Skokie Boulevard and Golf Road. For unknown reasons, the passenger grabbed the driver's shirt and then fled the cab. Police described the suspect as a white male, 20-25 years old, 6 feet tall and about 160 pounds with blond hair. Speeder nearly hits police On Dec. 12 about 1:30 p.m., officers were wrapping up a routine traffic stop in the 5200 block of Dempster Street. As officers walked back to their squad car, one of them "was almost struck by a small red vehicle traveling westbound at a high rate of speed," according to the report. Police caught up with…

Robbed at gunpoint On Dec. 13, officers were wrapping up an attempted residential burglary in the 4800 block of Grove Avenue when a man flagged down police and said he had just been robbed at gunpoint near the 8800 block of LaCrosse Avenue. The robbery victim described the suspects as an Asian male with a stocky build and a black male with a thin build. Both were described to be about 17 years old. Truck missing wheels Police were dispatched to the 7200 block of Linder Avenue to investigate the theft from a truck about 10 a.m. Dec. 5. Monday Blotter: $1,200 Identity Theft Case, Charged With DUI

Identity theft A former New Jersey resident who now lives in Skokie came into the police station to report a case of identity theft on Nov. 18. According to the report, someone from his hometown ran up a medical bill of more than $1,200. The man told police that since moving to Skokie, he had not visited his hometown where the incident occurred. Police are investigating the matter. Coat rack caper   On Dec. 6, a woman came into the Skokie police station to report that someone removed her parka from the women's coat rack at Life Time Fitness, 5300 Old Orchard Rd. on Dec. 2. Vehicle vandalized  A man told Skokie police that the rear window wiper was torn from his SUV on Dec. 7. Gangs tag public signs A woman called Skokie police to report that a marker was used to draw gang graffiti on two exterior signs between Dec. 2-10. A pitchfork was drawn on one of the signs, which supposedly represents the Gangster Disciples. Teen swallows marijuana Police responded to a school in the 8100 block of McCormick Boulevard about a student in possession of cannabis. According to the report, teachers smelled a strong odor of marijuana in the boys bathrooms while only one student was inside. BluRay movies shoplifted Dariusz Nmi Palaaszynski, 49, of the 5700 block of Ainsle Avenue in Chicago, was charged with retail theft about 2 p.m. Dec. 1. According to the report, Palaaszynski concealed two BluRay disc movies while shopping at Best Buy and left the store without paying for the items. Police were notified and caught up to him near Skokie Hospital. Items taken from garage A man told Skokie police that three bicycles, a skateboard and a basketball were all missing from his garage in the 5200 block of Madison Avenue on Dec. 6.   Theft from dealership A spare tire was removed from a pickup truck on Dec. 3. Monday Blotter: Home Robbery at Gunpoint, Gun Allegedly Stolen

Residents robbed at gunpoint On Dec. 1 around 9 a.m., police responded to a robbery in the 9000 block of Keating Avenue. According to the report, two black males wearing ski masks entered into a home and struck a couple with a pistol. The intruders asked the couple, "Where is the money?" They eventually looted $2,800 in cash from a safe. Both victims were attacked were left bleeding from head injuries, which were later treated at Skokie Hospital. One of the victims was able to chase down the suspects and rip off the license plate to their getaway vehicle. Police are investigating the matter. Please post the arrest update of the Keating home intruder incident or if you have I can't find it. The Skokie Review wrote about the arrest of a 22 year old Skokie man involved in this horrible crime and maybe his accomplice has been arrested by now as well. Bank account scam A woman called Skokie police on Nov. 13 around 3 p.m. to report that someone obtained her information and opened an unauthorized account in her name. According to the report, the victim received a bill of $1,305.73 for services at a home in the 8600 block of Niles Avenue. The account holder told police that she had never lived at the address. Attempted theft from motor vehicle On Nov. 28 around 11 a.m., police responded to a theft from a motor vehicle in the 8200 block of Lockwood Avenue. Increasing vandalism  Police responded to a criminal damage call in the 4100 block of Mulford Avenue about 12 p.m. Nov. 14. According to the report, the owner said his vehicle's taillight was smashed, which police determined was not caused by a collision with another car. The man also noted that over the last few months, eggs were thrown and fireworks had been set off in front of his home. He told police that he had no immediate suspect.
